Conservative Disinformation About Harriet Miers

A Satirical Play In One Act

CHARACTERS:

Tony Blankley

Ann Coulter

William Kristol

David Limbaugh

Rich Lowry

Michelle Malkin

The play is set at the National Academy for Conservative Pundits in Washington, D.C.

Scene: The area adjoining the Academy’s bar.

Time: Sunday, October 2, 2005, about 6:00 pm.

As the curtain rises, the audience sees a room furnished in the manner of a venerable English gentlemen’s club. Beyond the church-like stained glass windows, dusk is settling over the capital, lights from the outside creating odd shapes of color in the room and dappling six men and women sitting in a semi-circle.

Blankley enters from stage right, collapsing himself into a leather club chair.)

Blankley: Well, it’s true. He’s going to do it. No question about it.

Malkin: That’s not so bad.

Kristol: Not so bad? It’s great. Harriet Miers is perfect. Female, successful lawyer, Texas Bar Association president, Bush’s own lawyer, rated a top attorney in the country, White House counsel, evangelical Christian. And she has no paper trail.

Limbaugh: Yeah, but the President will be accused of cronyism. Gonzales as Attorney General, Brown at FEMA, that woman just now at Immigration. And apparently no one knows what Miers believes.

Lowry: Look, just because no one in the White House is talking about this, we’ve got to give Bush the benefit of the doubt. After all, he’s appointed lots of conservatives to federal Courts of Appeal, and even district courts. He repeatedly said that Scalia and Thomas were the kinds of judges he would appoint to the Supreme Court, and even though Roberts may not be from the same mold as them, he’s close. The President keeps talking about "strict construction" and not legislating from the bench.

Coulter: Bush has known her for years. He must know what she believes. Rich is right. Look at what he’s said and done so far. We have to give Bush the benefit of the doubt. So we have to support her.

Malkin: Yes, but if she’s a marginal candidate, is our support going to help or hurt? It’s said that Jimmy Hoffa told Nixon he supported him, so Jimmy asked should he come out for Nixon or against him.

Blankley: Michelle has a good point. If we strongly support Miers, it may give the democrats, and even some Republicans like Chafee and McCain, and the lady from Maine, ammunition to use against her.

Coulter: Right. We have to attack the President and Miers. That way, we’ll make her look less like a conservative, and maybe that putz Harry Reid will support her just to piss us off. Tell you what, I’ll say Miers isn’t even qualified to play a Supreme Court justice on "The West Wing."

Kristol: I’ll write that conservatives were spoiling for a fight, for the nuclear option in the senate. That Miers seems like a nice lady, but as far as being a Supreme Court justice, she’s an empty robe.

Malkin: Even if Miers is "born again" and has a good heart, that doesn’t make a

Supreme Court justice—that’s going to be my take.

Limbaugh: As far as I’m concerned, I’ll holler that it’s disgraceful, given the real conservative judicial talent that’s out there, and I’m going to say so.

Lowry: I like the idea of alleging affirmative action and cronyism.

Blankley: My pitch is going to be that Miers is a meager offering.

Kristol: Sounds great. If we come down hard on the President and Miers, it’s likely that many of our fellow conservatives will take the cue and dump on them too. If that happens, the dummies on the other side of the aisle may figure that to spite us, they’ll give her a free ride.

Limbaugh: So by opposing her, we support her. Yes, I’m for it.

Lowry: Unless, of course, we really oppose her.

As the curtain falls, it is now dark outside the stained glass windows. Only dim Tiffany lamps illuminate the room. But all six can be seen smiling, enigmatically.

Curtain falls.

Not sure about "evangelical Christian", but I am sure about being an evangelist for the Texas Lottery. The gospel of "scratch and sniff".

Wouldn't it be nice, at some point, where a conservative can speak their viewpoints, have it known, have a paper trail, rule just upon the law and not act like a legislature and then be rewarded by a compassionate conservative president with a seat on the Supreme Court?

Or will all future conservative nominees be body doubles for the invisible man?

Speak not, oh conservative, lest you be tainted with those words of common sense and be relegated to the back of the room.

I'm sorry you missed the humor value in it, as I labeled it.

One final note on George W. Bush’s management style and his Harvard Business School background does not derive from the classroom, per se. One feature of life there is that a subculture of poker players exists. Poker is a natural fit with the inclinations, talents, and skills of many future entrepreneurs. A close reading of the odds, combined with the ability to out-psych the opposition, leads to capital accumulation in many fields, aside from the poker table.

By reputation, the President was a very avid and skillful poker player when he was an MBA student. One of the secrets of a successful poker player is to encourage your opponent to bet a lot of chips on a losing hand. This is a pattern of behavior one sees repeatedly in George W. Bush’s political career. He is not one to loudly proclaim his strengths at the beginning of a campaign. Instead, he bides his time, does not respond forcefully, at least at first, to critiques from his enemies, no matter how loud and annoying they get. If anything, this apparent passivity only goads them into making their case more emphatically.

she is a born again Chistian and member of an evangelical church in Dallas. In fact, she joined 200 others in breaking away in the last couple of months to go with her pastor of the last 25 years when he was replaced by a new PC preacher.

As to her time at the lottery, she was put in to clean up the corruption left over from Anne Richards administration. You know, friends of Ronnie Earle. She has been highly praised for cleaning up a very corrupt organnization.

The issue of proud conservatism goes right to the heart of this article. It's funny, but the assumption is that real, genuine conservatism can't win, we have to be 'stealth'.

Bull! We should be rolling and punking these leftists every chance we get instead of accomodating their socialism.

I have no problems with getting into a streetfight with Leftists. The problem as I see it, however, is that this "rolling and punking" more often than not targets some who should be considered allies. Therefore, it can be corrosive on the personal level.

Well, I consider Meiers an ally, from what I know about her- admittedly, not much. It's not her with whom I've got the problem.

It's the behavior and strategy of the White House. It's been a lot of years, he has our support to further the conservative agenda, and so often he fails to live up.

The Supreme Court is THE reason that I supported the GOP twice. So,in the big picture, my gripe about the lack of guts on display here is small. I hope (and that's what we're reduced to with an unknown like Miers) that she will defend the Constitution in the long run, in which case our support for Bush will have paid off. That's what's truly important.

But instead of someone like Brown, who we could have all supported with an uprising, we are throttled back into neutral. Oh well.

Indeed! That's the status we have to get back to! Gonna take a coordinated effort to move all sorts of governmental power back to the states, though. And that included electing senators who don't re-elect themselves by divvying up your excessive taxes.

Vote for the fiscal conservative and all else will follow.

No. We have to be smarter; otherwise, why be conservative?
