After a few days of arguing over the Miers nomination for the Supreme Court I am rather sick of it. I have been arguing for her even though I know little about her. I think she is a fine individual and probably a good Christian , and I think her qualifications are just fine. After all 35 of 55 Founding Fathers were lawyers, does that mean the other 20 werent qualified? But I digress to write this because I am moving into the No category.
I decided this not because I dont like her, I personally feel that she would make a fine Justice, but her simple nomination has torn the base apart. I think it would do us and the RNC good if we all united against her, because as it stands right now we are becoming laughing stocks to the otherside, and if there is one thing I hate ,and thats to be laughed at by commies. We all need to stop the name calling, the troll insults and the Bush-bot insults and well all of them, and yes I am guilty of it too. I wont be a vociferous voice against her, you will probably still hear me defend her and the President, like I have been doing.
I urge a consensus from the base to emerge over this. The poll on FR is showing the Yes crowd with 30.3% the nos with 24.4% and the need more info at 41.8%(the hillarys dont count), and this is the member poll results.I dont think it would be to unfair to reason that if you were to poll the base outside of FR the results would be the same, and that is dangerous for any party. Sure it shows that we arent a lockstep party, or a lockstep ideology, with the powers that be. But if a movement is to survive it has to have a secure foundation, and right now I see the foundation rumbling as if to fracture.
The other side can laugh, but there's one thing that's fairly clear to me: She might not have a coherent judicial philosophy. She might not change the culture of the court. She might not have scathing dissents and brilliant decisions. But she will be a vote in favor of life and the second amendment. The Dems can laught all they want, but at the end of the day, that is what they will be left with.
And it would be most helpful if I remembered to use Spellcheck!!
not at all. people were heeding the call to tone it down but you couldn't. you had to come in and start up the insults. The record is clear.
Exactly!
The Supreme Court issue has been THE issue since Roe v Wade, the fact remains that the base has been clamoring for it and under Bush we all thought we had our golden ticket, I still believe it and I am a loose no, and if she gets rejected, withdrawsor what have you the next nominee will most certainly be everything we wanted in a candidate.
I should hope you feel that way.
You know very well there's a certain segment of FR that takes advantage of these news stories.
Look, nobody believes old lady Ginsburg can last another three years, and Stevens is already drooling ~ one more trip down the steps at the USSC building may well be his last.
There's even the possibility "W" will get to fill a 5th seat ~ I'd guess Souter will decide the anxiety of being the most hated single member of a bad court is too much for him ~ "W" will get a chance to undo his daddy's mistake.
All those other people you think may be "more qualified", whatever that means, may well end up on the Supreme Court sooner rather than later, provided they want to move to the Washington DC area.
LOL!
To me the conservative movement is far more important than one lady. The conservative movement will create many Scalias and Thomas's and will institute the laws we want, so she goes down,no biggy pick another to our liking.
That is SO funny after the stuff I've seen you posting since Monday morning!
That's interesting - I guess I wasn't freeping as much back then.
I'm not trying to diss the freepers who are supporting Bush - I guess I've mainly been venting my own frustration, I expected more from him right now. The "select your own lawyer" thing really has me rattled, as I think the SCOTUS nomination is something a person should earn through their accomplishments and not who they know. Idealistic of me, to be sure. And I'm not applying that idea backwards to previous nominees - I'm talking about how I personally view it. John Roberts seemed like a very good choice, so this was a huge letdown.
I am just waiting for the troll opus-a-thon.
She's not going to be rejected.
Unless conservatives demand she be rejected.
Ah! I see. You see human beings as cannon fodder.
Pardon me while I distant myself from your reasoning.....
>>>Why not pick someone who has an established record and will get 51 votes?
There is no assurance you'd get the 51...the RINOs in the gang of 14 would tip the scale...
Ah, you weren't here in 1999.
Perhaps you're projecting what you wanted on the president, something he hadn't promised?
It's his pick; he made it; and he's kept his promises so far.
I'm "wait and see", along with Brownback and Coburn among others.
Peggy Noonan, William Kristol, nearly the entire staff of the National Review - you are including them w/ this group? Sorry but you can check my posts going back a couple of years and see that I'm no "malcontent" either.
so? somebody posted an excellent vanity calling for everyone to tone down the rhetoric and stop the insults. The first few posts reflect civility. Then you came in and broke the ice with the insults, The record is clear.
Reason # 1: Any Conservative nominted will not be confirmed.
They would not get 51 votes.
People on Free Republic may not realize it but Bill Frist, Predisnt Bush and his advisors know that the Republicans were not only throughly humiliated by the so-called compromise regarding the Juducial nominees engineered by John Mc Cain and other Republicans. They were emascalated.
In a nose-to-nose fight, the Democrats will win. Bill Frist knew this. This was why he was so reluctant to try to change the fillibuster rule.
Personally, I would have preferred Janice Rogers Brown, but I can support The President's nominee.
