Miers Choice Prophetic?
Koenig's International News ^ | 10-6-05 | Bill Wilson

The nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court by President George W. Bush was revealing insomuch as Christian organizations were so focused on their response to the news media that many abandoned their missions.

Now some may think this is a reach, but in reality, it is a sign of the times where Jesus said in Revelation that the church was neither hot nor cold for Him. And the way that many ministries came to their reactions regarding Miers is a strong indicator why Jesus said in Revelation 3:16, “Because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth.”

While many Christian ministries were cloistered behind closed doors crafting their responses to the selection of Harriet Miers as if the world were holding its breath on their every word, some were calling it as they saw it.

American Values President Gary Bauer said that the choice, given the availability of so many very qualified candidates, was disappointing. Further, he expressed is dissatisfaction with the behavior of so many ministries who were involved in politics. He said that the Christian mission was to change politics not become part of it. Certainly, it did appear that ministries the nation over were so involved in the process that they had left behind their first love—the call of Jesus Christ to be light and salt to the rest of the world.

Late last week there were some closed door meetings with Christian conservative leaders at the White House. The President floated three names that he was considering for Supreme Court Justice and Harriet Miers was among them. Conservatives said that none of the names were acceptable. With the weekend to think about it, the President, true to form, went with his heart in making his choice. He chose someone who he believes would hold true to his promise to select judges that will interpret the Constitution rather than legislate from the bench.

Within hours after the announcement that Harriet Miers was, indeed, the nominee, leaders and staff members of many Christian organizations were behind closed doors trying to figure out what to say. This choice caught most “in the know” flat-footed and tongue-tied. Some were incensed that they were not more a part of the decision and that a prominent Christian conservative was not chosen. Others lined up like Presidential lapdogs to affirm the President, mainly for political purposes, not because they believed Miers was the best candidate. Some said it’s a hard one to swallow, but we support the President.

Immediately, the rumor mill started. You can imagine what was going through the phone lines, as people looked at a 60 year old woman that has never been married, there is not much information about, and certainly someone who was hardly on the radar screen as a credible candidate. Some of these organizations spent the rest of the day trying to craft their official statement to the news media.

Jay Sekulow broke ranks early and said he has worked with Miers for over a year and that she was an excellent choice because she was ardently pro-life and had vetted most of President George W. Bush’s previous judicial nominees—all of them strict constructionists. The Family Research Council took most of the day to say it would take a “wait and see approach.” After cautiously checking out some personal references, Dr. James Dobson was satisfied to trust the President’s judgment, noting that his selection of judges so far has been excellent.

Then conservative leaders began scrutinizing the choice. Stories appeared that said Miers filled out a questionnaire about her views on homosexuality and that she wanted AIDS education for Dallas and believed that homosexuals should have the same civil rights as everyone else. Yes, she answered the questions as reported. She added that AIDS was a concern for the community and that people needed to know about it. And it is not part of American culture to discriminate against people because of their sexual problems or mental illnesses. Having the same rights doesn’t mean special rights.

They did not ask her if they should be allowed to marry, but they did ask if the Texas sodomy law should be repealed and she twice answered “no.”—something the U.S. Supreme Court later did repeal and opened the floodgates to the entire same sex marriage issue. I am not an apologist for Ms. Miers, but fairness and good judgment should be in order.

Insiders who actually know Harriet Miers say she is staunchly pro-life, a Christian, and believes the Constitution must be interpreted as written. We will hear in the confirmation process her views and opinions. That she has no previous experience as a judge is probably a good thing. Fresh outside opinions are welcome. Someone off the street would have more common sense than what we recently have seen on the Supreme Court.

Now some Christian groups are blaming others because they failed to make a strong enough case to the President that a known conservative with a history of ruling in favor of life and strict constitutional issues should be nominated.

Bottom line: Christian groups are still talking among one another about how bad a choice Miers was, but they are unwilling to take a strong public stand. It seems they waste too much time believing their pontifications will change the world when there is much work to be done. Jesus commanded us in Mark 16:15, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” With over 3,000 unbelievers dying every hour, I wonder how many could have been saved while Christians were worrying about the selection of Harriet Miers after it was cast in stone?

Too many people confuse religion and Christianity. Christianity is not a religion, but a relationship. Everything else is religion.

Huh? This is the most convoluted, irrational piece I've read. Here we have a strong, Christian woman who is, by all evidence, STRONGLY pro-life and anti-sodomy, and some Christian groups should have opposed her? Huh???

...Jesus said in Revelation 3:16, “Because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth.”

It is actually better to be cold than to be lukewarm? This quote has always confused me. Besides, wasn't Jesus long dead by the time John the Revelator penned those words?

About one million unborn children are dying each year. If that is ever going to be diminished, it's vital to have justices that are willing to overturn Roe. Yet, we have no idea how Miers or Roberts would rule on Roe.

I know a lot of Christians that are "STRONGLY pro-life and anti-sodomy", but that doesn't qualify them to sit on the highest court of the land. Can she write an excellent judicial opinion that will sway other SC judges who haven't made up their minds? Can she write an opinion that will withstand future cases?

I don't think that's all it's cracked up to be. John Marshall did ok without being a judge and having written a lot of opinions. You only need to be able to read the Constitution. It is no tougher than that.

It doesn't say it is better to be cold...that verse says "I would rather you cold than luke warm..."(when you look at the entire passage)

It is a comment on integrity versus wishy washiness. God seems to have more respect for the soul that is antithetical to him as opposed to those who "sit on the fence". The ones who are antithetical(or cold) to God are often souls who are in fact crying out for God, but just can't let go of their presumed claims to self ownership.

The lukewarm mouth platitudes in the name of Christ and may practice a kind of ethical ministry, but tend to pull back on their zealousness when real persecutions or difficulties challenge them...indeed don't such folks(such as "moderate" voters) raise a kind of mental queasiness in your mind when ever you contemplate them? One does want to "spit" them out in a sense when you consider such folk?

This is what i believe Christ is speaking of!

Yes, but how warm was Luke? Given that he grew up on Tatooine under those two suns, I'd bet he was pretty warm.

I find this to be a little bit of a double standard, we say the left has no right to ask the question of whether they will uphold Roe v Wade, yet you argue for the right to know they will overturn it ? As an argument for or against Miers or Roberts, that type of reasoning is pure illogic.

Every case brought before the Supreme Court should be decided by the arguments made, precedents sited and facts presented in each individual case, to do otherwise is judicial activism.

Matthew 21

23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?

24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.

25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?

26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.

27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
