Israel Court Bans Use of 'Human Shields'

Israel's Supreme Court on Thursday banned the military's practice of using Palestinian civilians as "human shields" in arrest raids, saying it violates international law.

The court ruled in response to petitions by human rights groups.

In August 2002, the court had issued a temporary injunction against the practice. Human rights groups have said the military has repeatedly violated the ban since then.

In Thursday's ruling, the court said the practice amounts to a "slide down the slope toward a severe violation of international law."

Marwan Dallal, an attorney for the Israeli human rights group Adallah, said: "It's an important decision, but we need to see if the military will abide by it."

The human shield practice became an issue in the spring of 2002, when the Israeli military carried out a major offensive in the West Bank, in response to a series of suicide bombings by Palestinian militants. During arrest raids, soldiers would sometimes force Palestinian civilians to approach the homes and hideouts of wanted people. In some of these cases, the civilians were caught in crossfire and were wounded or killed.

Sometimes, to fight an animal, you have to become an animal.

Is it really so surprising that th Israelis sometimes resort to giving the likes of hamas and islamic jihad some of their own medicine? Its ideological darwinism out there and every weakness insures extinction.....

Does anyone else here think it's significant that in Israel, where Palestinian arab propegandists and the UN regularly maintain that arabs have no rights, there is an arab human rights group called "Adallah" represented by an arab attorney, Marwan Dallal, and that it can win supreme court cases against the military?

Muslims are about as persecuted in Israel as they are in the US. In Israel, though, they make up more than 20% of the population of citizens, whereas in the US less than 1% of the population is Muslim (I don't know how many of them are citizens).

Israeli soldiers don't shoot the Palestinian civillians - their Hamas brethren do. The reason they use locals is because the locals ALL know where the booby traps are. Innocent civillian, my ass.

I think "human shield" is a bit over the top. Arabs have been used as gobetweens and to gain entry to homes. Clearly agreeing to the task is problematical in situations like this. A more detailed article.

'Neighbor procedure' ruled illegal

Ideological darwinism... what a turn of phrase.

Ok. Now when are the human rights groups/UN/Hague going to condemn the Palestinians for using human shields when they stash arms in schools and Mosques, use civilain areas to launch terror attacks, and ambulances to transport terrorists?

Per the J Post article there was one teen death due to this tactic. Doesn't the Supreme Court of Israel have anything better to do?
