Miers ‘genuine Christian,’ pastor at her church says; Dobson calls pick 'outstanding'

WASHINGTON (BP)--Barry McCarty thinks Harriet Miers will make a “great Supreme Court justice,” but the woman suddenly in the media spotlight is known to him as a humble Christian.

Miers, nominated Oct. 3 by President Bush to the U.S. Supreme Court, is a member of Valley View Christian Church, a conservative congregation on the north side of Dallas. McCarty, who many Southern Baptists know as the parliamentarian of their annual convention for the last 20 years, is the preaching minister at the church, which affirms the infallibility of Scripture.

Some people flip out just because Bush didn't nominate their own personal friend, or some completely obscure hero that they had in mind...

It’s an hour and a half into your classic hyperviolent Kung Fu movie. The black-clad Ninja elder leaps at Master Bush, sword flashing. You know Master Bush’s next move: a swift block with the left fore-arm, accompanied by an upward thrust of his blade, cleaving the Ninja’s heart in two.

But Bush has some other idea: a graceful, almost gentle Judo move puts the Ninja behind Bush, on the ground, but uninjured. How could Master Bush choose such a move? This is a deadly fight, with weapons! If our champion had fought aggressively, the battle would be over with the first strike! Instead the enemy is barely fazed, and can mount another attack. The outcome is in doubt. Master Bush has failed! His fighters are restless. Bush’s sword may as well have been Souterized!

But of course, it’s also not clear who would have won in more direct combat, who would have come out on top if Bush had fought in the direct manner, the style of Mistress Janice Rogers Brown, or of Master Robert Bork, for that matter.

Everyone with a partisan interest wants to see his champion fight aggressively. (How else would a Ted Kennedy get such affection from the Dem base?) But while not fighting at all necessarily leads to defeat, it isn’t always the most direct and aggressive fight that leads to victory.

Just as those who trash our military are actually serving the interests of our enemy, those who trash this nominee are serving the interests of the Democrats.

Ann Coulter: "Bush may as well appoint his chauffeur head of NASA as put Miers on the Supreme Court."

Some people have really gotten out of line in opposing Miers. I think she'll be just fine.

Nice.

What you and the warriors did not see, is that Master Bush was wearing his crony ring... the one that contains a small but powerful dose of toxic liquid placed on the tip of a small but sharp point.

The ninja starts to get up.. but then he falters. Dazed, he drops to the ground mumbling something about Janice Rogers Brown.. and how she would have been an easier target... and then he collapses.

That would be George Will, Ann Coulter and some of the other elitists ...

Have they ever been elected to any office ?

No, but I understand that Ann's latest book is out in paperback. So maybe she'll get a sales boost out of the extra attention she's getting by trashing a pro-life born again Christian who has been nominated to the Supreme Court.

I don't know if Miers is going to be a good choice or not but her standing as a Christian is barely relevant. I know lots of people I consider to be good Christians and some of them are lawyers but not a single one of them is qualified to sit on the Supreme Court and I think Miers falls into that category. I doubt she would be on most people's list of the top 1000 lawyers in America.

While I think Roe vs Wade and abortion in general are morally repugnant, I want the decision reversed not for that reason but because it was blatantly unconstitutional and bad law.

Miers is probably a fine person but there are lots of conservative lawyers/judges that have far better qualifications. She may turn out OK but she is an unworthy pick.

For the life of me I can't understand why so many people have this attitude when we have a substantial majority in the Senate. Why should our guys shy away from direct combat? We would still have a majority if RINOs Snowe, Chaffee, and Collins voted no. Surely GW and the Senate leadership would be able to fashion a majority with practically any qualified conservative candidate. Am I wrong about this?

The National Law Review named Harriet Miers one of "The 100 Most Influential Lawyers In America” in June 2000.

Bush's base has been whats killing him in the polls, me included, but I have to believe if he thought he could trust in the senate he would. A defeat by the dims on a supreme ct nominee would be a mega disaster.

You left out DeWine, Specter, Warner, and McCain.

You'll only confuse him with the facts. At least the Dems won't mount a serious attempt at defeating her with all this noise from conservatives ...

I don't think anyone publishes a list of "top" lawyers. "Most Influential" is the best I could find.
