In a just-completed CNN interview, former Bush speechwriter lambasted the Miers nomination.
Among his most notable quotes: "other than those in the president's inner circle and others who are obliged to say so, there's not a conservative in Washington who thinks Miers is the best possible nominee."
The host read him a quote in which Jay Sekulow said the President showed excellent judgement in choosing Miers. Frum pointed out that the quote praised Bush, not Miers.
He added that we can and should do better, and essentially suggested that the nomination be withdrawn and she be replaced by an oustanding candidate.
He mentioned that if Bush wanted a woman, he could have taken Interior Secretary Gale Norton, a former state attorney general who argued many tough cases. If he wanted an older person, he could have taken Ted Olson or Ken Starr.
There's conservatives in Washington?
I can imagine that some here will attack the messenger. And it's true that Frum was criticized for writing something of a tell-all book about his time at the White House than garnered him a lot of criticism.
But he is definitely a plugged-in Washington player, and when he says that not one independent conservative in DC thinks Miers is the best possible choice, I think it's noteworthy.
Not many outside of Washington either.
Please. get off your high horse Frum. You ain't President. Actually you're just a two bit hack speechwriter. There's a reason you ain't in the White House any more.
If I was Miers, I would vote with the lefties on the SC just to piss off these blow-hards even more.
Gale Norton supports abortion rights. No way she would win.
Let's see: failed Catholic, failed Episcopalian, now working on starting a new cult. Yep, sounds like a level-headed conservative to me.
...except the conservative with the initials GWB who occupies the Oval Office.
Like I have said elsewhere, there will be hell to pay for conservatives after all this is over with this White House.

There hasn't been a major Bush speech since he was shown the door that he hasn't panned.
What in the world does that mean?
explain please. The hell I see is if Miers turns out to be a leftie---then there sure will be hell to pay.
I wonder if W ran the Miers nomination by Roberts..I also thik that Bish may have strong reason to expect that he will have another nomination to make....
I think Frum and NRO are going to be catching quite a bit of hell over their reaction to Miers for quite some time.
Having to pick "the best person in Washington" is a trap the President should avoid.
All he has to do is show is that she is qualified.
Let's remove everybody from the bench who was not considered the best candidate in the nation when they were nominated.
David Frum will be on C-SPAN's Washington Journal tomorrow morning.
It's not on the schedule yet.
I heard it on C-SPAN Radio a couple of hours ago.
Auto Erotic accident posing as journalistic prowess?
Yeah. He could have picked Ken Starr.
That nomination would have gone a long way!
Only a political genius would pick him. (/sarc)
