The victims are elderly residents of a nursing home dieing of some respiratory illness.

My guess is some airborne bacteria or virus similar to legionnaires disease. Another possibility is some kind of contagion in the food.

we do have to remember that these people are in a nursing home for a reason.....they are chronically ill, most very frail elderly, on a variety of immuno-suppressant drugs and God only knows what else....

the workers that got sick......Its more important probably to study them.....

The headline is wrong. It's supposed to read:

Wake me when it kills someone under 90 years of age. I thought the good ole plain vanilla flu could be fatal to an extremely aged person.

I agree. This may sound harsh, but when someone dies of a "mystery illness" at the age of 92, they've actually died of natural causes.

Not that this makes things any easier for their families to take, but you understand what I mean.

What are the symptoms of bird flu in humans?

In humans, bird flu causes similar symptoms to other types of flu:

* fever
* cough
* sore throat
* muscle aches
* conjunctivitis

Severe cases of bird flu can cause breathing problems and pneumonia, and can be fatal.

(conjunctivitis: -- pinkeye?)

McKeown insisted that despite the new deaths, the illness was winding down.

"Although the condition of some ill residents has worsened and unfortunately four more have died, others are improving and we are confident this outbreak is under control," McKeown said.

Public health officials have said it may never be possible to determine the exact type of bug responsible for the rash of illnesses, but they have ruled out influenza, avian flu, SARS and Legionnaire's disease."

Sounds like Anthrax.

See?  This is just backlash from last years cancelling of the Hockey season.

Now with the NHL back in business this should dissipate.

My Mother has been an LVN at many different nursing homes over the years. She says there is often some kind of bug going around that kills patients. The state board that inspects these homes always find rule violations that lead to the spread of such bugs.

The president no doubt knows more about what may be coming down the pike than we do. If he warned us about everything that could happen, he would get accused of causing a scare or panic if a situation didn't materialize.
