I just click on these threads for a chance to see 'belly girl'. Sigh.

Not here in Houston, at least not yet. I just tried again and nada. I will give it some time before I take any action (speaking to those idiots in India, omg), but this ain't gonna fly for me.

still down here in San Diego (RR) as well.

RR has my complaint, but as I understand it from tortoise's posts, there is little they can do beyond trying to get involved as a mediator.

Hello-

I work for Level 3 and can vouch for the previous comments; we have depeered Cogent, which means that any customer or third party with Level 3, such as roadrunner, will not be able to connect to cogent websites, and vice versa.

Obviously i have a dog in the fight, but its for good reason.

I spoke too soon. Drudge is back for me, but much is still out. The links above should indicate which side of the split you are on I would guess.

Has Matt's site crashed? Haven't been able to bring it up for two or three hours.

Yes, it is gone.

Do not attempt to go there again.

The capitalization police have been after him for years.

If you tried just a LITTLE harder, you could win the Vaguest Headline of All Time award. ;)

Should that not work the other way around too. Those on Cogent should not be able to get to those on level 3?

I understand that, but if it starts to lose them actual money, they might work a little harder on that mediation thing, don't ya think? I might even feel sorry for them if it were some small company or an inexpensive dial-up service, but here in Houston, RR is about as expensive as it gets, and when it works, it can't be beat, but when something goes wrong, well, you are just kinda screwed for at least a week. Their service sucks. I hate that. I want what I pay for.

I don't know about elsewhere in the US, but here in Houston, a couple years ago there was a big deal about Time_Warner, which is our cable carrier here, and Disney channel, and they tried to drop our local ABC affiliate along with all the disney owned channels, till they started losing customers. They fixed that situation real fast. Money talks.

This seems to deserve a thread of it's own?? Seems like a big deal.

Is there anything the ordinary customer can do about this? I can get to level 3 but not to cogent. Does this mean I will not ever be able to access those other sites? What do you suggest we do, and how would we know which providers use what and where?

well, those questions require pretty detailed answers that i don't care to get into. suffice it to say that eventually it will be worked out by the market. for the time being, the only work around would be complex routing schemes by the carriers stuck in the middle. for those suggesting that they leave their carrier or demand that the carrier go somewhere else for service, such as roadrunner.... all i can say is that they would be shooting themselves in the foot by doing so.

as i said, i have a dog in this fight, but the best permanent solution would be for cogent to agree to a mroe equitable peering relationship and stop using other carrier's networks for a free ride, and then undercutting prices because they have no network infrastructure to pay for.

and be on the lookout; there will be lots more of this stuff coming, and not just between my company and others. this has been a brewing issue for some time now.

I do understand what you are saying. It would be a lot more palatable to those of us stuck in the middle if we knew what was going on and had some sort of timeline. As I stated earlier, for me, its not just drudge, but some important sites that my family relies on. I guess if I whine and complain enough, at least I might feel better, omg. Thanks for your info anyway.

I mean there should not be one person posting here that can veiw drudge right?

Nope. Imagine that the Internet was ripped in half, and you could only see the servers that are on the half you are connected to. Some people would see Drudge, others would not depending on which half they are connected to. Now some network operators have the capability to bridge both halfs (with a little effort) depending on their peering arrangements and upstream contracts. FreeRepublic uses Verio, which I think will be able to bridge the gap as they are relatively well connected on the peering fabric (which I share with them, incidentally). If that is the case, there should be no access problems to FR.

Incidentally, if half of FR could not reach FR, you would never know about it because, well, they cannot get to it to post a complaint.
