Memo to All Republicans

To: Republican stalwarts having the vapors over the nomination of Harriet Miers
From: Realm of Sanity
Subj: All is forgiven, please come home
Ladies and gentlemen; please lie down on the floor, put a cold compress on your foreheads, and try to calm yourselves. Deep breathing helps. If you begin to feel dizzy, recall that you cannot fall off the floor although recent actions of the Democratic Party cast some doubt on this observation.
So you were hoping for J. Michael Luttig or Emilio Garza, or maybe one of the Two Ediths, and you got Harriet Miers. You're disappointed or perhaps confused. I'm with you; so am I.
But
. Before you go flying off in all five directions, saying you've "had it" with President Bush and threatening to "sit out" the next eighteen elections (just to show those stinky Republicans who didn't listen to you), let's talk this out. If you prefer, take a stress pill, assuming that is legal in your neck of the woods.
-snip-
He has known Miers for two decades and worked closely with her for his entire tenure as president, and as governor of Texas before that. Unless you think he's been taken over by the pod-aliens from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, he must think that Harriet Miers will be just such a conservative judge. He says she is; is he lying?
But even if he turns out to be wrong, and Miers is another Sandra Day O'Connor
how does hurting the GOP help your cause, which is still to get strict constructionists onto the bench? If a bunch of us fold our arms and refuse to vote, or vote for a wacky third-party candidate like Ross Perot, what happens? Well, what happened in 1992? Say, you've got a good memory; we ended up with William Jefferson Clinton in the White House. That sure worked out well!

Such a condescending screed is really going to help matters. NOT!
As the blacks are learning not to allow the Demoncraps to take them for granted, so will the conservatives with the Republican party.

hmmm - this is the same President who gave us a prescription drug benefit, campaign finance reform, and out of control gov't spending. Yet we are supposed to trust him with an unknown SC nominee. I don't think so - the stakes are too high!

And I've heard a lot about people like McCain being RINO's. Sorry. But Bush has got to be one of the biggest RINOs in history.

And why did GHB lose to Clinton and Perot because he said "read my lips, no new taxes." So now we get "read my lips, only conservative judges." So who is really to blame for the Clinton one, and maybe the Clinton two admin?

Oh boy, its a good think you posted late at night, or you would get slammed with your "fellow conservatives" calling you names like Bush-Bot and Kool-Aid drinker. Plus you dare mention that voting 3rd party splits the vote and put Bill Clinton office? wow... the 3rd party folks are going to remove you from thier Christmas card list.
I agree with your post, but you are a glutton for punishment! LOL!!

You don't understand. It doesn't matter at all what logic says. They hate Bush. What ever Bush does is automatically bad. Anything that hurts Bush is good in their world. They are only interested in Get Even With Them ism not in actually advancing the Conservative Agenda

You people are going to have to decide if you're Conservatives or Republicans. Then notify your senators.

Watch this. (You'll see the results in about two months, IMO - and more two years later.)

I am very unhappy with Bush's choice of Harriet Miers, but I certainly have no intention of jumping to a third party, or (God Forbid!) the dems, or sitting out any elections. For all of my fellow Freepers who are okay with Miers, I offer (for the third time today) this question:
If Bush had a filibuster-proof 60-40 majority of solidly conservative republicans in the Senate, would Miers still have been his choice?

Miers is not qualified to be a Supreme Court Justice, I don't care if Pres. Bush "knows" her and she goes to a good church.

She is still a stinky choice. I had lost hope for W and the remnants of the Repub party and conservatives, he has left. This choice only verified my thoughts.
To: quidnunc
how does hurting the GOP help your cause, which is still to get strict constructionists onto the bench? Now that we've had a few years to observe what the GOP actually does once it seizes all the reins of power, the beast needs to be hurt, hurt badly and hurt often.

Nice article, but I am still waiting for evidence that Miers is the MOST QUALIFIED candidate, not merely a qualified candidate. Do you believe the President when he says she is, in fact, the most qualified candidate, or, do you feel that she is the most qualified candidate who can get through the nasty dems in the senate with only minimal torture, because they are far more afraid of other potential nominees?
