Ansar Al-Sunnah Cell Captured in Kirkuk

Materials confiscated during an early morning raid on a suspected Ansar Al-Sunnah cell in Kirkuk Sept. 23. The raid netted a total of 14 suspected terrorists.

FOB WARRIOR, Iraq—Iraqi police and coalition forces detained 14 individuals suspected to be linked to Islamic terrorist group Ansar Al-Sunnah in Kirkuk Sept. 23.

The Ansar Al-Sunnah organization has claimed responsibility for many of the area’s terrorist acts against Iraqi civilians and Iraqi and coalition security forces, including suicide bomb and improvised explosive device attacks. The early-morning raid was targeted at several houses in the southern Kirkuk neighborhood known as Al Rashid.

“The first report from Kirkuk citizens was that an Ansar Al-Sunnah cell was operating in the sector with a possibility of about four detainees,” said Capt. Paul White, commander of the coalition unit involved in capture. “After raiding the last house coalition forces and Iraqi police ended up with a total of 14 detainees.”

According to reports, Items seized at the location included Saddam paraphernalia consisting of newspapers, CD’s, AK-47 rifles, license plates, cell phones and terrorist propaganda.

Working with Iraqi security forces to track down and detain suspected terrorists is part of the 116th BCT’s mission while deployed in north central Iraq. The unit’s mission also includes assisting Iraq’s new government, supporting economic development and facilitating communications.

The 116th BCT is comprised of headquarters and staff sections, two armor battalions, a mechanized infantry battalion, a support battalion, a field artillery battalion, an engineer battalion, and various intelligence, signal, and specialized units. The 116th BCT is one of several Army National Guard units deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III.

It's all quite simple Calpernia. What we are watching is a boil being lanced. It "ain't perty" but it's been festering for a long time.
