THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true. The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect total accuracy from the Bible.

In the Gospel of Matthew, both of the thieves insult Jesus for not saving himself (and them). In the Gospel of Luke, one of them insults Jesus and the other one rebukes him for it.
If true, this is really is disheartening. I hope all Catholics don't adopt this terrible doctrine. I read the entire article and it just gets worse and worse.
that's not my point... the paper is trying to say the CHURCH says so and the Church is the Vatican, when it comes to speaking FOR the Church, not a few bishops. see what i mean???
As long as we don't get into that "Bible code" stuff.. :o)
I seriously hope this was in jest. If not, you're in dire need of an anatomy class.
Which part don't you believe? I guess your god isn't able to do miracles, and wondrous works. Mine can.
He set the heavens above us, and the seas around us. He made the lands, and provided the forests. He made the animals, and fishes and birds. He made man, then woman.
He set a plan of salvation, because he created a sentient being, capable of taking directions, but not to be forced as an automaton. He made us in His image.
He provided a way for our salvation, because he has a plan for us. Believe it, or not... Rome wasn't built in a day... and God has given us some clues. Time can be stopped by my God. My God can cause a flood to cover the earth...
My God died on a cross, to save you from the penalties of your sins. Or... don't you believe He is able? If there really is a God, don't you think He can do things to confound the sensiblities of man. Laws derived from man's finite science and physics don't apply to the Law Maker. He made the whole ball of wax! ...or not...
No, I don't.
Actually, the Catholic Church is made up of all Catholics. The teaching authority is exercised from the Vatican.
And these bishops are reflecting teaching that has the full approval of the Vatican.
My God's cooler than your god.
The sad thing is that they just make themselves look foolish and they make Christianity look foolish as its representatives. The media plays on these stereotypes for all it's worth.
He can, but He usually doesn't. Instead, He acts through the natural processes He created.
It is much more important to focus on the truth of a particular passage in Scripture, and not argue over whether or not Lot actually turned into a pillar of salt.
You quit reading too soon.
There was a considerable argument during the Middle Ages whether Adam was created with an extra, "supernumary" rib which God removed to create Eve, or whether Adam was one rib short after she was created. I have no opinion one way or the other, and as far as I know neither did the bishops of that time.
There was also a widespread argument as to whether or not Adam and Eve had belly buttons, since these are normally the result of having had an umbilical cord attached there. If you examine paintings in the middle ages and the Renaissance, you find Adam sometimes has a belly button and sometimes not.
All I'm saying is that it seems pretty officious of the bishops to sit down and say, "This is true" or "This is myth," when they really have absolutely no way of knowing.
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
-Job 38: 1-7
Lot's wife...
i don't know how else to explain it to you then...
"For instance, Jonah literally in the belly of a fish for three days? Come on. Jonah's story is an allegory prefiguring Christ in the tomb for three days."
Jonah was a real person. His name means "dove". Jesus referred to "the sign of Jonah", a sign coming from the past of a once living person.
I believe God did "provide a fish" for Jonah, not sure why you find it hard to believe. It was a miracle.
Thanks, I just looked up the passages. You're right--there is a discrepancy. But one does not make the other untrue.
