Brownback Skeptical on Miers Nomination
Associated Press ^ | October 4, 2005

Posted on 10/04/2005 3:58:33 PM PDT by RWR8189

Senator Sam Brownback says he and other conservatives have ``a great deal of skepticism'' about Harriet Miers, President Bush's latest nominee for the Supreme Court.

The Kansas Republican is disappointed Bush did not pick a candidate with more of a track record. He had urged Bush to nominate someone who opposes the Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion.

Brownback compared the nomination of Miers -- Bush's White House counsel -- to that of Supreme Court Justice David Souter. Souter was nominated to the high court by the first President Bush and was believed to be a conservative, but he later turned out to be liberal on the bench.

Brownback is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He will meet with Miers in his Senate office on Thursday.

Very true, and a recent Ann coulter column documents how conservatives were touting Souter's impecable conservative credentials.

He says that there is NO WAY that this will be okay...and that it is just another time that Bush hasn't had the courage to do something...like vetoing a spending bill, closing the borders, forcing the dems to have to vote AGAINST the private accounts for SS....

So if Miers turns out to side with Scalia and Thomas on decision after decision this won't be okay because he didn't close the borders and veto a spending bill? Well that's just brilliant.

That pretty much sums up the way that Mark Levin is saying it...

Whenever a caller asks him basically the same question you just did...he gets defensive and says "Okay, you are right, I'm wrong, Miers will be the best SCOTUS justice this country has ever had...so sue me"....something to that effect.

IOW....he is not gonna "get over it" no matter what..which makes Bush's other "mistakes" make him madder now than they did before...

Well I take issue with him if he's questioning the President's courage. This man has sent nominee after nominee to the Senate and the Republican majority has been useless, just as they were with Bolton, Social Security, immigration reform, fiscal constraint and on and on. Levin is dreaming if he doesn't understand the realities.

I agree with you 100%, lets give thanks to President Bush, whom I support, because President Bush a great man and strong leader. I have confidence in this appointment, because Harriet Miers is a true conservative and pro-life. During 9/11 I watch firefighters, police, and emergency services workers bravely trying to help each other and America. Also our brave solders in battle find that their similarities far outweigh their differences. People in the military, people on 9/11 and people on the FreeRepublic.com, are working to serve this great country. As great patriots, in fighting this war on terrorism, and liberalism, we need teamwork, because it is absolutely necessary for USA and President Bush to win this war on terrorism, and liberalism. We sometimes forget that fact, but, I can't think of any other site, where conservatives of different faiths are coming together to accomplish a vital national mission. And that takes teamwork. And that's happening with our solders in battle and here on FR. today. We work together, different conservative faiths, from different faith backgrounds, and because we are looking out to win this war on terrorism and liberalism, we should support each other and our President. Our FR motto, “Teamwork With Differences, Nevertheless Teamwork.” Now we are engaged in a great internal and external testing whether that conservatives or any conservatives convictions so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. Let us have conviction that right makes might: and in that conviction, let us to the end, dare to do our duty, as we understand it to be and give moral support to our the President.

My God Bless our Troops, God Bless America, God Bless President Bush and God Bless Harriet Miers.

Thanks all.

That's what happens when the President thumbs his nose at the base who elected him, too many times:

1. Kissing up to Ted Kennedy and the ridiculously costly Education bill.
PS - Add the Medicare prescription bill. Cost? No one knows.
2. The Bush family adopting Bill Clinton, who is the incarnation of evil in the White House.
3. Katrina as a New Deal project, without a budget or any limits, except now to bribe the gambling interests into coming back.
4. Supporting Senator Specter for his re-election race, and then, worst of all, making sure Specter got the chairmanship of the all-important committee for judges and justices. Egads! Then Specter made nice a few seconds and hired a Democrat to screen nominees. The only words I could use here would be obscene, so I won't add to #4.
5. Now Janet Reno incarnate, after all these years, after all the broken promises.

He's been under deep cover developing his conservative credentials over the years just so he would have "cred" when he opposed Bush.

But this communist can't get anything past us.

Recall Brownback!

I was really disappointed in Ann, when she started sounding like a whiney Dem....

when she used the "cronyism" word .... just like Pat Buchanan did yesterday.

THAT word, along with "corrupt" are the two "talking points-word of the week", given to all dems and media...and NOW we have two of the most "conservative" authors accusing Bush of this also...

HMMMMMMMMMM

Oh, dear, hearing Tony Snow now saying that Laura Bush is a factor...hope they don't start throwing Laura Bush under the bus...sigh.

I think it's an apt description. I guess it sucks for us that GWB has screwed up so badly that Ann Coulter is in accord with Democrat talking points, but I certainly don't think she's TRYING to be a spouter of talking points. I think she's being honest. Ann's saying this person is totally out of her league and the only explanation is cronyism, which is just a fancy way of saying he hired his own lawyer instead of the actual job applicants, which is true. I think the hearings will be fascinating. I really think the point of attack should be her actual job knowledge. ESPECIALLY on the heels of Roberts' performance. Again, I agree with Ann. I didn't appreciate the stealth factor with Roberts. But I certainly had to give him credit--enormous credit--for his qualifications, as displayed by him in the hearings. I can't wait to see what she sounds like under intense questioning ABOUT CON. LAW.

Publius on Miers and conservative dissent: My liberal buddy Publius makes some excellent observations/points in this post:

Wow. The liberal actually has my number, particularly the first 3 paragraphs.
