A Sampling of the Writings of Harriet Miers

What kind of Supreme Court justice would Harriet Miers be? For anyone trying to assess her qualifications, analyze her philosophy and predict her behavior, Miers would seem to present a fairly blank slate. She has no judicial resume and hasn't left a long trail of noteworthy memos, briefs, oral argument transcripts or law journal articles.

Gay Rights

An indication of her stance on gay rights comes from this questionaire from the Lesbian/Gay Political Coalition of Dallas Miers filled out while running for the Dallas City Council in 1989. In it, she supported full civil rights for gays and lesbians and backed AIDS education programs for the city of Dallas.

Views on the Law

Elsewhere, a search for indications of her personal views and writing skills turned up two articles penned by Miers for the legal publication Texas Lawyer. They show a concern for the rule of law—and an emphasis on collegiality, compromise and determination

Such views in 1989 were hardly mainstream in any party.

We all can be active in some way to address the social issues that foster criminal behavior, such as: lack of self-esteem or hope in some segments of our society, poverty, lack of health care (particularly mental health care), lack of education, and family dysfunction."

Ugh.

Heck... I back full civil rights for gays/lesbians/transgenders/whatever else there is.. What I don't support are any "special" rights for them. The goal is for us to ALL have the same rights, not assign any special category to one group or another. Her support is technically fine with me.

But....she's not saying the COURTS should be active...she's talking about individuals.

"The same liberties that ensure a free society make the innocent vulnerable to those who prevent rights and privileges and commit senseless and cruel acts. Those precious liberties include free speech, freedom to assemble, freedom of liberties, access to public places, the right to bear arms and freedom from constant surveillance. We are not willing to sacrifice these rights because of the acts of maniacs."

That's encouraging.

Oh, I agree. But I have a natural negative reaction to people who talk like liberals, even if in reality what they are saying is OK.

This does NOT make her any more palatable, in fact, it makes her quite the opposite.

Harry Reid likes her, her paper trail is skewing left, she donated to Gore (heard that on FNC and it was said by Kay Bailey Hutchison)....Miers is sounding more and more like Souter all the time.

I agree. Of course, gays should receive full civil rights, they are human beings. Just not special rights for marriage, etc.

I would need more info than that to go against her.

They already have civil rights as post-natal human beings with a pulse. G/L civil rights are about special rights.

Sadly, pre-natal human beings with a pulse do not have any rights whatsoever according to the incredible invisible right to privacy hidden somewhere in the constititution. I'm more concerned about their rights, not the g/l community.

Ann Coulter just took apart President Bush's SCOTUS nominee on the air during her appearance on the Mike Rosen show here in Denver on 850am KOA. She called for listeners to write their senators to oppose the nomination. Wish you could have heard it!

Most good Christians would say the same thing: including, I would think, Chuck Colson.

"foster" does not equal "cause."

Shouldn't every citizen have "full civil rights", whatever that ambiguous term means? What is all the uproar about?
