Jay Sekulow, James Dobson and Father Frank Pavone seem quite pleased. And they ARE social conservatives. If they thought Harriet Miers was a closet liberal, they wouldn't be congratulating the President on this nomination. It seems quite a number of conservatives do look on this with a very different set of eyes. They think their values are reflected in this woman. So if those conservatives have suddenly morphed into Reid, Schumer and Clinton butt-kissers then its the biggest con ever perpetrated on Republicans. I don't think this was the best possible choice and at the same time, I'm keeping an open mind. You do not know much about a person on the first day and we will know more about Miers over time. So keep your powder dry til then, people.

How many conservatives do you know that have contributed to Al Gore? How many conservatives do you know that were 'moderate democrats' in the late 80's (which is what she has been called today by both sides of the current debate)? How many conservatives do you know that contributed to the DNC during Mike Dukakis' run for President against Bush41?

A lot of us ARE former Democrats. I never voted for Reagan and my beliefs changed very gradually. I left my old party in 1995 and have never looked back.

I honor your 'party switch'! You're obviously an intelligent person. However, my question still stands, because as the President has repeatedly proven, being a 'conservative' and being a 'republican' are not necessarily the same thing these days.

Sometimes it's hard to be conservative
Puttin' so much faith in just one man
He'll have bad times and he'll have good times
Doing things we just don't understand

He's done a lot of things we know are grand
Yet he still needs our helping hand
So if we love him, we must stand by him
'Cause after all, he's still our man

Stand by your man
And show the world you love him
Keep givin' all the love you can
Stand by your man
Stand by your man

Aieee! I think you are probably just baiting for a flame war here.

That's what I think and I am ever so sorry for even trying to respond to your ongoing "I'm new here but" comments about what you find objectionable about FR.

If you find the place objectionable, it makes little sense to contribute only negative comments about the place, about others here on FR, things of that nature. Perhaps you can try to appreciate that.

I have no idea what you express with that last paragraph of yours, since it doesn't make any clear statement about you being "that way." I haven't a clue what it is you mean. I won't be commenting any further about this -- whatever it is -- however.

With your selection of Harriet Miers today, you have betrayed your word, you have betrayed me and you have betrayed every social conservative who ever worked on your behalf.

If you know nothing about her, how do you know that W has betrayed you?

[only thing I hoped for in return was a staunchly conservative Supreme Court nominee, as you promised. Like your father with his "no new taxes" pledge you have turned your back on your most reliable supporters. It breaks my heart to say so, but since you seem so interested in the approval of the Democratic party, let Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton carry your banner from now on. Regretfully, I will no longer provide time, money, or support to you or your administration.]

We should have known that the apple does not fall to far from the tree. I personally am sick and tired of liberal republicans who try to please the ungodly left wing politicians more than their own base of conservatives and Christians.
Et tu, Brutus?

"You probably know this by now, but that "church friend" who knows what her views are is Nathan Hecht, a Texas Supreme Court Justice."

I hadn't heard that. His opinion is worth more than some guy who just sits behind her in church. This might work out but I am not optimistic.

The particular Katz Drugs I mentioned was in New Albany, Mississippi. May have been part of the chain. Of course I was only 6-10 years old at the time, and wouldn't have known anything but their toy aisle............

I'll have no problem writing in "Mickey Mouse" on ballots for the rest of my life if a nominee like this turns out to be another David Souter.
