And let us not forget. Ronald Reagan, God rest his soul, was a democrat at one time. As was Richard Shelby. As were many of the men and women years ago who are now stonch conservative constructionist Republicans. I think we need to keep this in mind. How guilty will some feel here if they really jump on her, and in time, she proves to be the fifth conservative constructionist Justics we have so desperately needed for so many years? People need to be patient. And Pray. So far, I like what I've heard about her. All the pro I've heard has been from people who REALLY know her. All the con has been conjecture and speculation. No known conservative has come out against her that I've heard. That needs to be taken to heart.

I am withholding an opinion on that. Lots of us would not have minded watching liberal heads blow off. Harry may be toying with us for the same reason. I'll be darned if I'll bite on that one.
I dare say that if we were able to personally tell President Bush how "disappointed" we are....he would be the first to understand.
He would know that we don't know much about Miers...and that it will take time...but you know what...it was being hinted all weekend that Bush would do this/that because of his numbers...
Either from the conservatives not happy or the dems not happy....and one thing we DO KNOW about President Bush, he seems NOT to care so much what the pundits and polls tell him to do----from either side of the aisle.
I think there is a consensus here that we would like to see the President lead the horse to the water even if only to demonstrate whether we have a horse or a jackass.
Correct and true, it does send that message. I also believe that if we had strong Republicans in the Senate, instead of several RINO's, my GUESS would be that a stronger candidate would have been chosen. When this "Compromise" was made in the Senate, led by RINO McCain, to avoid the Nuclear option, it showed that the Republicans in the Senate will NOT fight for us. So as a result, weaker choices are made. Just my 2 cents folks.

He says she was on the missions committee for ten years, taught children in Sunday School, made coffee, brought donuts: "Nothing she's asked to do in church is beneath her." On abortion, choosing his words carefully for an on-the-record statement, he says "her personal views are consistent with that of evangelical Christians... You can tell a lot about her from her decade of service in a conservative church."

Hecht says about Miers' judicial philosophy: "She's an orginalist -- that's the way she takes the Bible," and that's her approach to the Constitution as well -- "Originalist -- it means what it says." He also says she's not a social butterfly who will be swayed by Washington dinner table conversation: "She goes to the dinners she's supposed to go to. She's not on the social circuit."

Here's a quote I've been tossing around all day - the president said about Miers:
"When it comes to a cross-examination, she can fillet better than Mrs. Paul."
Sorry to hear that. But please don't bring an "air of arrogance" that it takes a lawyer to understand legal issues. There is plenty of evidence that a sizable portion of your profession knows little about justice, The Constitution or the law. There are plenty of folks without a legal degree who know more about the law.
I was just starting to think this when I read your post. I think this is saying that Bush got indication from enough RINO's, that they would NOT support a hard line conservative. Bush may have wimped out, but it seems to be doubtful that he wouldn't have chosen Luttig et al for the post if he thought he had the backing of the usual suspects (rino scabs)...
I am hopefully optimistic about the nominee, however. Life is simply too short to see the glass as half empty all the time, I did plenty of that in my Liberal days.
I don't know if you saw the presser with Harry Reid and Ms. Meirs a few minutes ago....
but, Mo1 and I did...and even though Harry said a few "positive" things about her...he was decidedly uncomfortable, pale...and I don't think very happy...
He mentioned talking to Leahy on the phone...don't you know that Leahy probably wasn't happy that there is an article on record about how much Harry likes Miers...
If there is one thing we do know about the dems....their goal in life is to make President Bush and the GOP out to be "corrupt" and just plain horrible human beings...
so, if Harry comes out in favor of her...after Leahy and others capitulated on Roberts in order to be able to FIGHT this nomination...Harry just made it harder for them...oopsy!
I guess I'll say this once more, hope to make the point and just go on. I, and many others here, were once not only dems, but liberal dems. For example, I worked for the Gene McCarthy campaign. I did not know I had to be BORN conservative to have someone believe I actually had the brains and the sense to become one. If conservative from birth becomes the test, we will be a small party indeed.
And you'll find I have not ruled her to be, or not be, a strict constructionist.
You'll also find I've stated emphtically that no one can claim betrayal or completion of his promise. Those that do, make fools of themselves. Simply enough is not known to take a stand.
I've firmly stated voting for Gore does not disqualify. My own parents have voted for people we do not care for, neither do they anymore. As well, I've voted for Democrats in past though not at the Presidential level.
And something I have not commented on, the folks making statements about her looks or being a single woman are completely out of line.
My main position is that I feel her qualifications are merely adequate, and that is a disappointment.
I'm expressing that disappointment.
But I'll neither work for a withdrawal of the nomination, nor for confirmation. Instead I'm awaiting the administration's case. That I do so, is evidence of my faith in the man and good will towards despite the disappointment over the selection. I could easily denounce him, but have not.
I'm just disappointed that so many conservatives here are flying off the handle without taking time to digest this and research it. Like Rush just said, she fought to have the ABA renounce it's Pro-Choice stance. She's been an active member of a VERY conservative Christian Church, and is a long time evangelical Christian, not some milk-toast church that accepts gays and people having affairs. As Rush said too Hecht has backed her up, and he's a well known strong Christian coservative. And Jay Sekulo has jumped out and backed her early. I would have LOVED a fight with an "in your face" conservative. I am disappointed that so many freepers are jumping to nail her and Bush to the wall. I thought liberals were extreme shoot first asak questions later destroy the unknown. It really disappoints me that so many conservatives here are so knee jerk "kill kill kill" if something isn't spelled out at the start. I have a little concern because she's not a well known outspoken conservative, but overwhelmingly most strong unbending conservatives are not known as well as Pryor or Luddig. That's just fact. Miers needs to be given the benefit of the doubt. I think Roberts certainly proved himself during confirmation. There's no reason to think that Miers will do any differently. In fact, I think she may well prove to be more conservative than Roberts and fit quite well with Scalia and Thomas.
Not sure the truth is what some want to hear.
BTW, Limbaugh mentioned that Meirs is a devout Christian. If that's the case, that she's devout (I don't care about which faith), then I like her better already.
