WASHINGTON RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman issued the following statement on President Bushs nomination of Harriet Miers to the United States Supreme Court.
President Bush has once again, after thoughtful deliberation and consultation, nominated an outstanding person in Harriet Miers to serve on the Supreme Court. Harriet Miers has had a trailblazing career as one of the top lawyers in the country and is extraordinarily well qualified to serve on the Supreme Court.
As the top advisor to the President responsible for selecting outstanding judges like John Roberts, Priscilla Owen, and Janice Rogers Brown, Harriet Miers has demonstrated her commitment to the principle that judges must not legislate from the bench, but rather strictly interpret the Constitution with respect for the law.
John Roberts confirmation, like the process that put Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the court, showed the American people that the overwhelming majority of Senators put principle before partisanship. As Harriet Miers confirmation process moves forward, all Americans hope that their Senators will follow the Roberts and Ginsburg precedents, and reject Howard Deans advice to obstruct the process.
...demonstrated her commitment to the principle that judges must not legislate from the bench, but rather strictly interpret the Constitution with respect for the law...

And this is what the radical libs are against..the very idea that a justice not be a liberal activist, why that will destroy America (our liberal agenda).... :-)
No official comments from the democrats yet.
I smell another O'Connor "swing vote". I hope President Bush isn't wasting his political capital.
Either Bush has made a brilliant move, and once again hoodwinked the Dems, or he's made a brilliant move and once again hoodwinked us.
I'll wait for the hearings and to what more I can learn about Harriet. I hope all this rumour-mongering can end and we can find out how she'd rule as a judge.
A rather middle of the road statement, but brilliant. ;)

I hope Coburn and Brownback are agressive in the hearings in sounding out her judicial philosophy.
Agreed.
From the quickie bios, she can, er, swing both ways, if you know what I mean. Who knows how deep her conservatism is. I sure wouldn't want her to be on the bench if same-sex marriage is up for deciding.
They ain't getting a dime of money or a second of volunteer time from me for quite a while.
60 years old? Supported Dukakis/Benson in 1988 when she was 43 years old?
This is betrayal, plain and simple.
GOP - stop calling me for money. No more flyers, either. I'm through with you.
'From the quickie bios, she can, er, swing both ways, if you know what I mean. '
Although I am as skeptical as you, it must be remembered that a Judge HAS TO SEE BOTH sides, not be a Ginsberg and an idealogue. I am hoping this woman, if confirmed, will be a judge ON the Constitution, not one who writes one.
Apparently, not very deep at all. Evidence from other threads shows that she contributed to the DNC and Al Gore back in 1988.
Bush II has probably blown it, just like his daddy did with Souter.
Blah, blah, blah. You mopes must be laboring under the impression that YOU get to nominate Justices.

Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
