Oct. 3, 2005 Harriet Ellan Miers is White House counsel and was formerly President Bush's personal lawyer in Texas. She first served in the White House as staff secretary and was deputy chief of staff before she was named counsel upon Alberto Gonzales' transition to attorney general.
When he was the governor of Texas, Bush once publicly introduced Miers as a "pit bull in size 6 shoes."
Born and raised in Dallas, Miers earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics and her law degree from Southern Methodist University. In addition to her legal career, she served one term on the Dallas City Council.
Miers, 60, broke barriers for women throughout her career. She reportedly was the first woman hired by the prestigious Dallas law firm Locke Purnell Boren Laney & Neely, where she became a successful commercial litigator. She also became the first female president of the Dallas Bar Association in 1985 and was the first woman elected president of the Texas Bar Association in 1992.
Miers met Bush in the 1980s, according to published reports, and she was counsel for his 1994 campaign for governor. He appointed her chair of the Texas Lottery Commission in 1995.
Miers then was president of Locke, Purnell, Rain & Harrell and co-managing partner of Locke Liddell & Sapp before she joined the White House in 2001.
In addition, Miers was named one of the Top 50 Most Influential Lawyers by the National Law Journal in 1998, and she received numerous other awards from groups including the Dallas Women Lawyers Association, the Anti-Defamation League and the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers.
remember hat during the 2000 primary campaign, Bush and Forbes represent big business, McCain was the moderate maverick while Bauer was the ultimate pro-lifer
Bush had his hands tied.
If Republicans had 60 senators Estrada would have been on the federal bench and then elevated to the supreme court.
Any conservative would have been fillabustered and there are too many rino's for the nuclear option.

Pioneer Bible Translators' desire is to work with Jesus Christ in discipling the nations. We believe that enabling people to hear and read God's Word in their own language is an essential part of discipleship. To this end we work to translate the Bible into languages into which it has not yet been translated.
We want to help you know us:

Kay Baily is pro-abortion so I am not assured by her support of the nominee.
Just a tiny bit out of the WSJ article about her this morning:
"Ms. Miers reveals little of her own emotions or ideological persuasions, but has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Bush administration on a broad list of initiatives including tax cuts, Social Security reforms, restrictions on federal spending on embryonic stem cell research, national security, education reforms and fighting terrorism."
Of course, following the boss's leadership is one thing. I wonder how she'll do, though, when she's the boss.
Bye. And you are wrong. Nice knowin' ya.
"Why? Looks like a lot of Democrats are going to be forced to publicly smear a woman."
Good point. That looks like why.
The phrase used repeatedly is "won't legislate from the bench" and "supports the Constitution." I don't know how how much clearer things can get. Some here just want an excuse to bail. Bye, I say. I'm sick of these people.
Young Women's Christian Association
Former Member, Board
The YWCA is the oldest and largest multicultural women's organization in the world.
Across the globe, we have more than 25 million members in 122 countries, including 2.6 million members and participants in 300 local associations in the United States.
More important than the numbers, is our mission to eliminate racism and empower women. We provide safe places for women and girls, build strong women leaders, and advocate for women's rights and civil rights in Congress.
Women come to us in times of crisis, as survivors of rape or domestic violence. They come for job training and career counseling. They come for childcare. They come for health and fitness. They come for a variety of reasons. But they come. And they leave with a renewed spirit, new skills, and stronger lives.

At 60 she might not be on the court long? Don't be so sure. Stevens was about 55 when he was nominated, as I recall. Thirty years later he shows no signs of going anywhere, unfortunately. Though if Stevens did retire, I guess we can't count on GWB to replace a conservative to replace him.
I have been reading this from numerous posters this morning. How does anyone know this? The President has said that he will appoint those who will not legislate from the bench. Since he has know Harriet Meirs for YEARS, I'll assume he knows her temperment, and has an idea how she would 'judge' things.
I think her having had commercial legal experience is a plus in this day of so much corporate litigation making it to the Supremes.
I'm terribly disappointed. This woman is not even close to being the most qualified for the supreme court. An awful pick. I'm done with Bush...
I hope you are right on this. Anyone know what she thinks of the Second Amendment?
You have no idea how these justice's will rule until a case comes up before them.
For one, he supported Specter( and the GOP will pay for that foolishness!)..I wouldn't judge him based on the nominees yet..
"She's still pro-choice and had a hand in writing partial birth abortion statutes, according to another post. Is this meant to placate libs?"
Gee, I thought Bush was a conservative. /sarc
I agree. While the Dems are playing Katrina games, Rove has already moved ahead on the chess board. Uncanny.
