There is no doubt in my mind that she is pro-choice. Time will prove me right.

So you just know that, even though her minister said she was pro-life? So you know more about her than her minister?

What criteria would you use (ignoring the personal attacks, which are inappropriate and in some cases have been totally offensive)? Rhenquist was a brilliant academic and had experience arguing constitutional issues. Does Miers? Is she experienced in any area of substantive law that is going to be a major issue before the Court? Weren't there numerous other proven conservative nominees that had these qualifications?

What do we know about her that gives you confidence in the nomination other than "Bush likes her"?

Look at the flip side to this. If you want to have a career like Miers or Rice, better to not have kids. There is no way to do what they do and raise kids right.

What do we know about her?

This is what I have been able to discern, mostly from information and links that have been posted on FR (America's most trusted source of news):

1. Miers has donated only to two Congressional candidates, Pete Sessions and Jon Newton. In both cases, she gave the maximum $1000 to these Texas Republicans. Sessions has a very good pro-life voting record, rated 0% by NARAL. Newton has been outspoken and uncompromising in his support for the unborn.

2. Miers has been an active member of the Valley View Christian Church in Dallas for twenty-five years. Based on their web site, this is a bible-believing Church, so her membership does indicate that she is a born again Christian.

3. Miers also donated to Don Stenberg's re-election campaign. Stenberg was the Attorney General of Nebraska and he is pro-life. He faced harsh criticism from the left because of his energetic defense of Nebraska's ban on partial birth abortion.

4. As President of the Texas Bar, Miers opposed the resolution by the American Bar Association to officially endorse killing unborn babies.

5. Miers donated to Al Gore in 1988. But that was when Gore was pro-life. Southern conservative Democrats were snookered by their national party and many later switched to the GOP. Others, like Gore, flipped over to the dark side and became devout leftists. Good southern Democrat conservatives are a thing of the past, but they were not so in 1988.

I think the President has made a good choice for the Supreme Court.

Actually, Clinton was "pro-life" when he was running for governor of Arkansas. It all depended on which way the wind (or intern) blew for Bill.

You got it. Within days, if not within hours, the battle lines will be drawn in the usual configuration. We will all love Miers. The Rats will be backtracking, choking on their early neutrality, claiming they didn't know she was pro-life, Christian, traditional, conservative, etc. President Bush has successfully ruined Day One of the Demo's strategery to hit the nominee hard in the first 24 hours - they are already off balance and trying to find their footing!

If Levin is right, the Republicans in the senate don't have to confirm. Maybe we should start a letter writing campaign.

Every group has a group incapable of rational thought. Disagreement or confusion is not being incapable of rational thought. Bush could have picked someone who would generate disagreement, as any candidate would, but NOT confusion, as this one, and Roberts did for that matter.

Levin is the "gold standard" of commentary on this matter as far as I am concerned. if he doesn't like it, we should all be worried.

A lot of these "snarky" comments are variations of what we are hearing from the talking heads, like Levin, Malkin, Kristol, etc.

I expect better than this sort of reactionary finger pointing from them, as they set the tone.

I'm kinda taken aback by the reaction on FR today. Not much if any info about this nominee, and people have gone hog-wild deriding her. I'm really shocked.

- If there's one thing that I think I've learned about Bush in the past six years is that he is very, very serious when it comes to his Christian beliefs. I'm sure in his many years of close association with Miers they have had informal chats on many topics, including abortion. I think he believes that he has found someone who shares his core values or, at the very least, is a strict constitutionalist. Time will tell but I think Bush may have won another round.
