One word I have not heard on TV, radio, or this thread is "legacy" referring to Bush and this nomination. I wonder why. Is it because everyone, supporter and detractor, knows that he does not make decisions based on legacy, but on character and conviction?

You are probably right, but I would imagine Bush HAD to have considered the effect this pick will have on this country, thus his legacy. I would imagine the sting of his father's fatal Souter appointment made a huge impression on him.

Another reason to consider the MSM's ommission in pointing out that this pick will affect Bush's legacy is that deep down they KNOW that he learned from the sins of his father and has selected someone loyal to him who realizes the fate of his legacy will lie in her hands.

If that Pastor believes she is pro-life, and wants her on the court, he must know that proclaiming her to be pro-life will only make that occurrence more difficult.

Ain't that a hoot? We have pro-life conservatives running around wailing about Bush's choice and that he took the safe route. But if it comes out she's pro-life, then it's going to make it harder for her to get confirmation. So just how safe a choice was she, then?

Can't have it both ways...

A quiet dignified moral single woman who is detail-oriented and loyal to President Bush (a conservative!) who clearly clearly shares his values and sense of morals and responsibility, who is great friends with Mrs. Bush and likely shares her morals and values as well?

At sixty years of age, I doubt whether Ms. Miers is going to suddenly lose these character attributes, so I think we're in good shape.

What an opportunity to learn who here is cool, calm and reasoning, and who here is panicky, emotional, and shouldn't be trusted to order a pizza correctly in times of stress. ;~D

If the ABA loves her, she's pro-abort.

""cheney just claimed...comfortable with Miers"

Wow, the VP supports the Pres. pick, I'm shocked."

What BS. Cheney says that picking Miers isn't "appeasing the left" - well, Mr. Vice President, she was suggested by Harry Reid - how are we NOT supposed to see that as "appeasing"?

And he wraps up by saying; "Trust me" - not good enough. Sorry.

The other Souter factor, and the one that seems to plague ALL Pubbie picks for the court, is the slow, yet steady march to left the judges make, AFTER they get on the court. The pressure to go with the left is enormous, and other than Scalia and Thomas, all the other Pubbie judges eventually succumb (to one degree or another).

Wrong. Someone posted an interview with her pastor. His words were that her views on abortion were consistent with evangelical Christianity. Last I checked, that meant pro-life.

The ABA backs here because she is qualified and a former ABA executive.

"Why? Can you give me an example of something that would cause that?"

There is no doubt in my mind that she is pro-choice. Time will prove me right. I can't imagine that she is a true social conservative if she served on the TX State Lottery Commission, gave to Gore, Bentsen and Kay Bailey Hutchison.

The republican party has been fracturing for quite some time. It's too late to suggest that the GOP stay united. Those days are over.

I, too, would have preferred an openly conservative nominee, but in making the announcement this morning President Bush did state that he requires the nominee to be a strict constructionist. I think that was the message to us that she's going to be what we want, and the fact that little is known about her means the Dems will have trouble making a case against her.

Yes, a successful knock-down fight with the liberals would be emotionally satisfying, but what's important is that we get a strict originalist on the court. After the superb job the President did in nominating Roberts, I'm willing to trust him on this one.

If I turn out to be wrong, of course, I'll be eating dirt all over this forum!

"Exodus is a worldwide interdenominational, Christian organization called to encourage, strengthen, unify and equip Christians to minister the transforming power of the Lord Jesus Christ to those affected by homosexuality."

Well...I just found something in Texas called "Exodus Ministries" and its function is to minister to ex-cons. Here is the link: Exodus Ministries

Perhaps we're all wrong about which organization this is.

I'm not saying that I agree with that or support it, but it is true. It cuts both ways. The socialists are a reality that must be overcome, and the media WILL allow them to have it both ways.

It would depend on what I learned about the candidate before election day.

My scenario is assuming that we know that Cooter from Dukes of Hazzard is a Republican and a Christian and that's all we have to go on. Do you laud the GOP for maUking such a crafty pick? Or do you say, "wait a minute - who's at the wheel here? We don't know a damned thing about this person and you just nominated him for president?"

Unfortunately, I don't get to pick SC nominees, but I do get to vote for the Presdient who will.

Assuming that in voting for a particular president, you are reasonably assuming he will also reflect the party's desire for a particular tone to the Supreme Court by nominating judges who share the same philosophy (what the hell is power for anyway?), you think the President gets pass on this because, "oh well, he's the president?"

Tell me again, why should I not support her so far?

Because she is clearly not the best qualified to hold such a critical position that determines the course of law going forward in a society threatened by the decay of gay marriage, abortion, eminent domain and gun control.

I don't care if she unzips her face to reveal the twin of Anton Scalia. She's not qualified, when there's a bullpen of tried and true originalist judges who actually fit the job description of "jurist". Bush just told every one of these competent, qualified judges, "I trust the ability of a career lawyer/politician on the Supreme Court better than yours."

It's a disgrace.

There is no doubt in my mind that she is pro-choice. Time will prove me right.

So you are relying on nothing but your opinion. Meanwhile, the pastor of her church has said her views on abortion are consistent with Evangelical Christianity.

For being such a devout Christian, you sure are quick to bear false witness.
