I was strongly for Roberts because he was the most qualified candidate out there. And he had a conservative background. Not only do we not know who Miers is, she is not qualified for the Supreme Court. The White House underestimated how much we hate cronyism, especially bad cronyism.

He's lost his courage somewhere on the line.

"Miers has been a member of Valley View Christian Church in Dallas for 25 years, where Hecht has been an elder. He calls it a "conservative evangelical church... in the vernacular, fundamentalist, but the media have used that word to tar us"

Even Jay Sekulow of the ACLJ is endorsing her. Some hope here after all. www.aclj.org/news

Wasn't Al Gore running around claiming to be pro life in 1988?

Algore was something of a conservative back then. The mask didn't come off until his time with BJ.

Well, the GOP is wasting no time. Just got this e-mail seconds ago.

Dear ----,

Today, President Bush announced his choice to succeed Justice Sandra Day O'Connor as the next Supreme Court Justice: Harriet Miers. Ms. Miers is the third woman to be nominated for the Supreme Court, and like Justice O'Connor is a legal trailblazer. Ms. Miers is an extremely well-qualified and fair-minded individual who is committed to interpreting the law instead of legislating from the bench.

President Bush selected Ms. Miers after embarking on a thorough and deliberate thought process. This confirmation however promises to be much more contentious than the confirmation of Judge John Roberts. Before Ms. Miers was even announced many Democrat groups said they would oppose her. They have no interest in giving Ms. Miers a fair hearing or vote. They are promising to throw every punch, make every accusation and pressure every Senator to oppose this nominee no matter what her qualifications may be. We have to be prepared to counter their actions and that is why Harriet Miers needs your help.

To ensure Ms. Miers is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, I need you to do three things.

1. Call your Senators. Tell them Harriet Miers has your support and deserves theirs.

2. Sign our petition in support of the timely confirmation of Harriet Miers.

3. Call talk radio, write a letter to the editor of your local paper and tell your friends and neighbors why you support the President's choice.

Harriet Miers has a record that demonstrates a commitment to faithfully applying the Constitution. For more information on the nominee, go to www.gop.com.

In the coming years and decades, the decisions the Supreme Court makes will greatly affect all of our lives. We need a jurist on the court who will not legislate from the bench, who will approach cases with an open mind and who will be fair. Ms. Miers is that jurist. Call your Senators. Tell them to vote yes on the confirmation of Harriet Miers.

Sincerely,

Ken Mehlman,
RNC Chairman

I hope you're right LW. I've been looking forward to a Republican prez straightening out this court for a lonnng time and this just seemed like a dice roll to me when we have so many proven Conservative choices he could have made. I'll just hope for the best.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Why not do some research instead of slandering her?

Because they're afraid, and they want to scream and cry like tantrum children.... I'm not a parent, so should we just let them cry it out at this point, or yell at them, or give them a big hug? I think my own mom used to mostly just let me wear myself out when I had a tantrum, but I don't know what the current parenting trend is.

I wonder is this post will be pulled: (from #1980)

If you can't see the danger in nominating a professional bootlicking administrator to the SCOTUS, well, then you'll get the country you deserve, dirtboy.

Bush shouldn't care what McCain and Specter say.

That's really friggin' brilliant. He needs both their votes to get her approved. He especially needs Specter's support to get her through the Judiciary Committee.

I don't like the RINO contingent of the Senate. But the math is simple - 55 pubbies - 7 RINOS = failed nomination. Statements like yours display an abject ignorance of the realities in the Senate.

If that were the case, what would it say about W in that he would think that a SCOTUS seat is a throwaway. It would say a lot, none of it good.

You can't even spell her name, Mr. False Prophet/Deacon boy.

And yes, it's easy to judge a nominee like her compared to all the other better ones out there, particularly given my own professional experience.

My point is, folks are trying to show she is unsuitable because she once gave to Clinton and Gore. I'm showing the historical context of such and how it has no bearing - like the other handful of factoids generating all the hand-wringing today.

I think there are two possibilities:

1. She's undergone a life changing event and is staunchly conservative

2. Her politics changed to conservative only when it was expedient, and now that she has a lifetime appointment we'll see her true political beliefs acted upon

Voting for empty promises is like not voting at all except you don't have to stand in line for the latter.

Which is exactly why I think Bush will go for the known conservative in the next fight. He does not do the "conventional" wisdom.
The Roberts-for-O'Connor pick was the "known conservative for a middling" one, even if it wasn't fully-apparent immediately.
Let us watch what all passes through Congress this fall, while the dems are watching this nominee; they think they have Frist on the ropes and DeLay down for the count.

I expect lots of things to pass under the radar, including more tax reduction.

I'm not holding my breath. I don't trust this bunch of drunken spenders to do anything any further than I trust the DemonRAT bunch of drunken spenders to show any restraint on anything beyond defense and then fritter the savings away on "social" programs.

Thank you for the correction.

"Exodus Ministry is a non-denominational Christian organization established to assist ex-offenders and their families become productive members of society by meeting both their spiritual and physical needs."

Both Christian organizations with clearly Christian goals.

I stand corrected, and offer my apologies for citing the wrong organization.
