Harriet Miers the pick AP

Many people that I know will feel or fear that Miers doesn't understand their lives because she never married and has no kids. That's just life.
Americans, especially the vast majority of conservatives, want people in these positions to be married with kids. That's life.

To attempt to refute that point is fruitless.

You are so narrow-minded you actually believe that most Americans believe as you do in this matter. You have nothing but anecdotal evidence to support that, but you think that, by saying over and over that everybody who sits as a judge or serves as a politician has to be married, that that will make it so.

It doesn't, and you are completely ill-informed.

But, your empty-headedness is typical when you jump into an argument, so no surprise there.

I'm not able to read all the posts on the nominee, but in a quick scan I'm very disappointed that I haven't seen any comments on what to some seems to be the most important qualification for any female in the spotlight -- her looks.

Excellent post, dirtboy. The **deal** is that the typical Bush bashers on this site can bash with new fervor due to their ignorance.

To which I have to answer (sarcastically, for the other side): Trust Bush and Rove! They know best! They have a secret plan! They play chess! They are geniuses!

And the only response we hear is: trust Bush.

And this is a surprise?

Given the reality in the Senate, would ANYBODY with a proven conservative track record have any chance whatsoever? NO!

Given that reality, the ONLY way we can get a conservative appointed is if the person nominated has NO TRACK RECORD. Is this optimal? Of course not. Is this reality? YES.

ANYBODY President Bush appoints will face hysterical opposition from the evil ones. If they cannot find dirt, they will twist something to make it look like dirt. If they cannot find something to twist, they will make something up.

They will howl in protest, and then point to their own protests as evidence of the "divisiveness" of the pick. They will point to the "seriousness of the charge" when caught making things up.

They will do WHATEVER IT TAKES. There is no depth too low for them to go. It's a wonder that anyone would consent to go through this.

Sheer unwashed speculation on my part, but maybe they like her because she isn't Brown, Luttig or Clement. And then there's the age issue - even if confirmed, she likely will not serve as long as JRB would likely have served.

I will try to retain an open mind on this pick for now but I must say I would have greatly preferred seeing liberal brains explode over the selection of one of the above, especially JRB. As the SAS say, 'who dares wins'.

I can't believe Bush has fumbled this badly....I guess the plan is to have her bounced out of the Senate hearings and the real selection will come forward.

That seems a bit circuitous to me, too Rube Goldberg-ian. If he wanted, say, Janice Rogers Brown, why not appoint her right from the get-go? Why intentionally weaken your position by appointing a non-starter? It seems to me that a red herring move would accomplish little more than wasting time, alienating the base, emboldening the opposition, and spending unnecessary political capital. No, I believe Miers is the pick, for good or ill.

I just know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Luttig, Owen or Alioto should've been tapped for this.

I suppose that is why we are President, and W is not here posting from home on his computer to FR. We have to know more that W does, RIGHT?

Up until now, I have been a loyal Bush supporter. When people on here such as Ol’Sparky went after Roberts, I came to his and Bush’s defense. I still think Roberts will make for a good Chief Justice. However, with his latest pick for the Supreme Court, Bush has stabbed us all in the back.

She is a total blank slate and we have no idea how she will vote on any of the issues. At least with Roberts we got somewhat of an idea from his work with the Regan administration. And even if she winds up being a strict constructionist, originalist, or texualist, the pick still stinks of cronysim and is wrong, especially when the likes of Michael Luttig and JRB are out there.

I can never forgive Bush for this pick. Bush picked her simply because she is his friend (and an old one at that, which actually might be good if she is another Souter). Our president that we have trusted so much has capitulated to the Democrats, the liberals, and the MSM. He had a chance to define hs legacy by taking back out courts, instead he chose not only to not fight, but to surrender to the enemy. Up until this point, I never thought Bush would fall victim to the pressure and actually listen to all this nonsense. We all told ourselves he will go with the best person available for the job. I think he did it for the first pick. However, it is crystal clear in this case, he betrayed his word. He has fooled us all and I am the #1 fool. I am utterly demoralized.

I am at law school right now and questioning why I am even here. One of the biggest reasons why I decided to go to law school is to join this fight to bring back our judiciary, by appointing the most qualified, originalist judges. Now, I feel like dropping out as I feel our cause is lost. I by no means am a defeatist, as I have never doubted our president and have always defended him in the worst of times. I traveled the county for 4 months working for the RNC in helping reelect him. Unfortunately, this is the payback we get, Bush stabbing us all in the back. Bush has failed us.

We have two options here. One,we make calls and send emails to all senators and urge them to vote against this type of Cronysism (though I doubt this will work, because once the Dems see how much we hate the pick, even they will pass up the chance to deal Bush a loss by voting her down or filibustering her, once they see confirming her will actually be a win for them).

If we fail to prevent her from being confirmed, then the next option is sit out the 2006 elections. I have never advocated this as a position because as bad as the Republicans may be sometimes, they are better than any liberal. However, with the spending out of control, our borders unprotected, and cronyism stinking up the capital and the Supreme Court, it is time to show them that we are not blind followers who will follow them wherever they take us. Maybe doing so will wake them up in enough time to prevent Hillary from becoming President in 2008, maybe not. But I feel there is no other way for them to get the point.

Again, I am by no means a defeatist. I reiterate that this is not only about the fact that Miers is a total blank slate. While she might wind up voting our way, I can never forgive Bush for apponting such a blank slate, especially when it is because she is his “loyal friend” (and again, an old one at that).

We have all been let down and must come to recognize it. Instead of giving up though, lets fight to ensure she does not get confirmed and if she does, that our leadership in Washington gets the message when we stay home in 2006.

My time and money will be spent elsewhere. Bush doesn't deserve our support and doesn't deserve a majority in Congress. A Luttig-type pick would have caused me to overlook his other failings, such as ridiculous spending. Not anymore.

Bush can look forward to Senate hearings called by the majority party during his last two years.

And when the Political winds changed in Texas...she weathervaned right along with them (Good sound principles there...how does GWB justify her work AGAINST his father and the (R)'s?) and in all likelyhood kept her previous "Principles" in tact, because the (R)'s decided to go with a "Big Tent" strategy...which just allowed the enemy to work from within to destroy the Base!

I wonder if GW Bush even realizes that this woman contributed five days before the election in the final push to defeat his father in favor of Dukakis. Could he be that clueless?
