From Staff Reports
NORMAN -- An explosion near the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium killed one person Saturday, OU officials said.

The explosion happened at the courtyard near the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botany-Microbiology Building on OU's campus, which is west of the stadium, according to Sgt. Gary Robinson of the University police department.

The explosion happened during the second quarter of Oklahoma's game against Kansas State.

After the explosion, police set up a perimeter of several blocks and made fans exit the stadium to the east.

PhiKapMom reported that her son and g/f saw two Middle Eastern men running from the scene. She is a long time poster with impeccable FR cred and stands by her reports. I also read a post on another forum by someone who was at the game and talked to the cops who said they believed that the bombers were attempting to plant their bombs on the buses in the parking lot.

TROP isn't stupid.

You do something dumb in states like Oklahoma, texas and the south (mainly), they are going to get you if they need too.

Slow down. Keep the useless speculation down until we can get some facts out.

There will be an identification of the body sometime soon. THEN we will know which way to do.

For all we know, it could have been some hippies.

It may be a good idea to have a FReeper take a photo of the blast site to get an idea of the magnitude. Also if there was a second explosion, photographic evidencew of that area would also be useful.

The problem with shutting down cell phone service is that the cell phone is a vital communications link for doctors, safety forces, utilities, and others.

In a disaster the telco's can shut the towers to average users, while preserving service for Emergency Services. It's part of almost every communities disaster plan.

I find it intriguing too. I keep waiting for them to say, "The name of the person who committed suicide is being withheld until family has been notified." Seems unusual that nothing at all is being mentioned about the person who killed himself (or herself)!

Consider the fact that the OU stadium does not have 'bleachers'. The stadium is poured concrete. Any explosion that rattled the bleachers from 100 yards away would be rather large and would have produced large scale damage in the near vicinity.

Okay. Didn't know the construction details. Do you know anything about the construction of the building marked 90 on the map at post 1545?

Sorry if this has already been asked:

Am I the only one who finds it odd that this isn't on Drudge? This story is a shocker and disturbing.

According to freepers here who seem to be in the know, Drudge was out dancing last night. Guess he might be a bit hung over right now. Should be hearing from him soon. ;)

Here's latest headline for the story:

"Person kills self outside Sooner football game"

Could we get a less descriptive headline.

Maybe something like this, "Some person did something at some sporting event somewhere"

That story has been going on since last night. Not much has been added to this since the event last night. It's just amazing the lack of information we are getting on this!

Damn it people, why are you still reading this thread? Shouldn't you be more concerned with what's going on with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? That's what's in the news right now that you really should be paying attention to.

This concludes our message.
