ATLANTA — Advocacy groups including the NAACP (search), AARP (search) and League of Women Voters (search) have filed a federal lawsuit challenging the new voter identification requirements.

"Georgia passed an absolutely obnoxious law," said former President Jimmy Carter, who lives in the Peach State. "It was specifically designed to prevent old people, poor people and African-Americans from voting," he said.

Carter co-chairs a private, bipartisan commission that last week recommended that every eligible voter in the United States receive a free, government photo ID card by 2010. He says Georgia's law is too restrictive.

The left seems to recognize that an end to voter fraud would mean an end to many of the liberals in government.

PLEASE don't let this be decided by a liberal "judge".

Anyone that wants gov't issued ID can get it..they just have to get off their a*ses and go get one..of course, since the majority of them have had the gov't care for them all their lives, they'll sit at home watchin Oprah or some such and wait for someone to come knock on the door to give them what they need..IMHO if they can't make one effort, on one day, for one hour, they shouldn't have a freakin right to vote..

He says Georgia's law is too restrictive.

I wonder what his opinion is of the new legislation to allow the collection of DNA samples from everyone stopped for traffic violations. A national DNA database could be useful for proving citizenship and voter identity.

This is not a poll tax in any way," said Stephens, who also said IDs can be made available free of charge to people that need them..........good idea....this should be a federal law

I heard Rush say on his show a coulpe of weeks ago that the state of Georgia will actually come out to your house to give you this ID if you have no way to come and get it. I'm sure he must know something the rest of the media is'nt letting us in on, don't know why else he would say this on his show

"It was specifically designed to prevent old people, poor people and African-Americans from voting,"

Carter is such an ignorant fool.

Good law. Hope all the other states follow suit. Jimmah is upset because the state is cracking down on the illegals, a big voter's bloc for the RATS.

I was surprised as heck the first time I ever voted when they DIDN'T ask to see my driver's license. It's a matter of common sense.

Carter is such an idiot, the citizens of Alabama have had this law for years. Is Carter saying Alabama is more obnoxious to old people poor people and blacks than Georgia? Or maybe Georgia enjoys their hold over voter fraud system. Lets see, how does Alabama vote? Yup, Red state. No fraud, Red state. Sounds like a protest chant.

So, Carter is receptive to the idea of reducing voter fraud in five years, but not now and only if it creates another federal bureaucracy. Unfortunately, I think the SCOTUS will shoot down the Georgia law as written.

Nonsense, Jimmy. The old, the poor and any disadvantaged blacks need photo-ID to start with in order to collect their welfare, Social Security, food stamps and whatever.

The sponsor of this bill was on FOX a week or so ago and explained that they would have mobile units traveling around the state to those who could not come to them and there would be no charge.
The ACLU attorney still said it was restrictive.

re: "It was specifically designed to prevent old people, poor people and African-Americans from voting,"

Depends on how you look at it. From my perspective it was designed to make certain the people voting are the same people who are registered to vote, and that they are indeed alive. Another of the glass half empty vs the glass half full controversies?

Dims just don't like anything that can help prevent the dead from voting.

These are the same people who claim abortion is too restricted if it's not available at the corner bar.

In addition to what you said about the FOX report, I was taken back when in a FOX interview, it might have been the same one who were referring to. That there were no DMV offices in downtown Atlanta. So people had to go to the surrounding suburbs to register their cars, and get their drivers licenses. That seems strange, maybe if GA placed some DMV offices in Atlanta itself, there would less hardship for the poor and elderly to get the "free" ID cards, at those offices.

I wonder how expensive it is for colleges and even Walmart's SamsClub (photo not great but viewable), to issue photo ID's, instantly? A couple of bucks each, and I have had my SamsClub ID card for years. So if the cards are taking care of, they can last for years, so there should be less recurring charges. In some school districts in the US, they are requiring kids to have photo ID's as early as elementary school, many in poor areas for security reasons. I am pretty sure that they have found a "cheap" way of doing it.

That is where some of those "Voting" grants should have gone to, not the purchasing of fancy voting machines, and in the pockets of local politicians and their cronies.
