Wait until all of that Socialist-built civil infrastructure gets just a little bit older....Even brand new apartment buildings going up right now in Russia look fifty years old. It's kind of weird.

There was a joke from the Soviet era. Q: If an earthquake like the one at Tashkent [1966] hit Leningrad, what would you have left? A: St. Petersburg.
The point was that at Tashkent, buildings from the Soviet era fell, while older ones stood.
To: mvpel
That is because the place is still ran by (Ex) socialist and communist freaks. Putin is former KGB, it does not suprise me that the socialist system still remains in some fashion.

I think I need hardly mention that Flaming Russian Ammo Dump would be one STELLAR name for a band.

No, the British blockaded Germany, thus cutting off American trade with Germany. The last thing the British wanted to do was to stop their own trade with America.

Dimitri! If I have been telling you once, I have been telling you 23 million times NO SMOKING IN AMMO DUMP!It's quite possible that that's exactly what happened.

Don't forget the explosions in the West Loch of Pearl Harbor that destroyed a number of LST's being loaded with supplies and equipment for an invasion (Saipan I believe). Some guys weren't using proper safety measures while loading some mortar rounds and one went off, setting off a chain reaction in the middle of twenty LST's. Some of the wrecks are still there.

The Soviets had more problems than most in that regard - this isn't really surprising. Sure, it could have been terrorist action, but Soviet/Russian ammo depots don't need any help to go "BOOOOOOOOOOOM!" .
Was a regular occurrence in the Cold War.
The Soviets always had these huge ammo dumps with untrained or barley conscript troops looking after them.
Used to look at aerial images of these huge dumps looking at all the hazards and mistakes made.
It was more of a surprise when they didn't go boom
