The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

Climbing clears the mind. Yes it can be scary, but watching birds fly around below you is quite a sight to see.

Your right about TM. My friends are constantly amazed that I know of what threats are current. I've become used to the phrase 'I haven't seen anything about that on the news'.

I depend on TM to get info on the latest threats, BOLOs, and preparedness lists. We've become an online community watching out for each other via info dissemination.

The key to survival is knowing what's REALLY going on.

"A careful study of his [Khan's] background and contacts reveal a number of clues to his extremism which the British intelligence apparently missed"

Seems like our FBI aren't the only intelligence agency that misses the "obvious". It might be a good idea for the FBI/CIA to hire some better internet researchers and/or investigative journalists to their ranks. I've uncovered so much stuff in passing by just plugging in names and such on google. (BTW: If any are reading this, I'd be happy to get paid! (o;)

I think a lot of the stuff is like "The Puloined Letter" - too obvious for them to see... Perhaps we should send copies of Poe's story to these folks! LOL

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Sat Oct 29 2005 03:33:13 GMT-0700.

YEMEN

October 28, 2005

This Travel Warning is being issued to provide U.S. citizens updated security information for Yemen. This notice supersedes the Travel Warning for Yemen issued May 6, 2005.

The Department of State strongly urges U.S. citizens to consider carefully the risks of traveling to Yemen. The security threat level remains high due to terrorist activities in Yemen, and Americans are urged to exercise caution and take prudent measures to maintain their security.

The Department continues to be concerned about possible attacks by extremist individuals or groups against U.S. citizens, facilities, businesses and perceived interests. From time to time the Embassy may temporarily close or suspend public services for security reasons. Emergency assistance to U.S. citizens during non-business hours (or when public access is restricted) is available through Embassy duty personnel.

U.S. citizens in Yemen should exercise caution and take prudent measures to maintain their security. Maintain a high level of vigilance, avoid crowds and demonstrations, keep a low profile, vary times and routes for all travel, and ensure travel documents are current. U.S. citizens who remain in or travel to Yemen despite this Travel Warning should register at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa and enroll in the warden system (emergency alert network) in order to obtain updated information on travel and security in Yemen. This can be done online at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs.

The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa advises American citizens in Yemen to exercise particular caution at locations frequented by foreigners country-wide and at restaurants and hotels frequented by expatriates. Americans who believe they are being followed or threatened while driving in urban centers should proceed as quickly as possible to the nearest police station or major intersection and request assistance from the officers in the blue-and-white police cars stationed there. Occasionally, U.S. Government personnel in Yemen may be prohibited from traveling to sections of Sanaa or other parts of Yemen. The Yemeni government also restricts travel to specified areas by U.S. citizens and other Westerners from time to time. Travelers should be in contact with the Embassy for up-to-date information on such restrictions.

The U.S. Embassy is located at Dhahr Himyar Zone, Sheraton Hotel District, P.O. Box 22347. The telephone number of the Consular Section is (967)(1) 755-2000, extension 2153 or 2266. The fax number is (967)(1) 303-175. The after hours emergency number is (967)(1) 755-2000 (press zero for extension).

Current information on travel and security in Yemen may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 within the United States, or, from overseas, 1-202-501-4444. U.S. citizens should consult the Consular Information Sheet for Yemen, the Middle East and North Africa Public Announcement, and the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement on the Department's Internet site at http://travel.state.gov. Up-to-date information on security conditions can also be accessed at http://usembassy.state.gov/yemen/citizen_services.html.

U.S. Military Says Soldier Who Defended Hotel During Insurgent Attack May Have Saved Lives
AP via Tampa Bay Online ^ | 10/29/2005 | Thomas Wagner

Posted on 10/29/2005 2:30:22 AM PDT by Quaker

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A U.S. soldier shot and killed one of three suicide bombers who attacked the Palestine Hotel complex before he could reach his intended target and that probably saved lives in the building, the military said Saturday.

In a statement on Monday's attack, the military confirmed for the first time that insurgents on the ground apparently lent support to the suicide bombers with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades in the well-coordinated strike on the hotel complex, where many foreign journalists live and work.

The three powerful explosions killed 17 Iraqis who were in the area at the time and wounded several people in the complex, the government said.

The attack involved three suicide car bombs. The first blew a hole in a cement wall protecting the complex. The second car exploded nearby as a possible diversion. Then a large cement mixer drove into the complex through the hole in the wall and exploded on a small road between the Palestine Hotel and the Sheraton Hotel, two 17-story buildings.

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/net/2005/10/29/brother.of.top.terror.leader.killed.in.southern.rp.(2.30.p.m.).html

Brother of top terror leader killed in
southern RP (2:30 p.m.)

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Security forces killed a
brother of a senior Abu Sayyaf leader during a
clash in the southern Filipino island of Jolo,
officials said Saturday.

Officials said many gunmen were also wounded in
the clash that occurred in the village of Asturias
late Friday.

There were no reports of casualties in the military
side, but the island's military chief, Brigadier
General Alexander Aleo, said the killing of Lalong
Parad dealth a serious blow to the Abu Sayyaf,
who is blamed for a series of terrorist activities
and and banditry in the south.

The slain militant was the brother of Albader
Parad, who is one of those wanted by the US for
the killing of two of its citizens in 2001 and the
2000 kidnapping of 21 people in Sipadan island
off Sabah.

"Parad's death was surely a big blow because he
is one of the most notorious criminal in Jolo and
behind the killings of many innocent civilians and
soldiers, and the kidnapping this year of three
Indonesian sailors," Aleo said.

It was unknown whether the militants were
planning new attacks or just resting for the night.

Aleo said troops on Saturday were still tracking
down the rest of Parad's gang in Jolo, where
security forces mounted fresh campaign against
the terrorist group with links to the Jemaah
Islamiyah and Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda
network.

Last Wednesday, government forces stormed a
militant hideout in the southern port city of
Zamboanga and captured seven people, including
Hilarion "Ahmad" Santos, the alleged leader of
the radical group called Rajah Soliman Movement.

Policemen, backed by troops, also recovered a
cache of anti-tank rockets from the hideout in San
Jose village.

Authorities linked the group, composed mostly of
Christians, who converted to Islam, to Jemaah
Islamiya and was believed behind the spate of
bombings in Manila since 2000.

It said the Rajah Soliman is the most radical
group next to the Abu Sayyaf and that the group
has terror cells across the country.

"We have established that Santos and his Rajah
Soliman group is tied to Jemaah Islamiyah and
the Abu Sayyaf.

There is an ongoing operation to track down other
members of the group hiding in the southern
Philippines," said Southern Command Chief
Edilberto Adan.

The military doubled its security in the Philippines
because of an increasing threats of attacks by
either the Abu Sayyaf or the Jemaah Islamiyah.

Troops are hunting down two senior Jemaah
Islamiyah bomb-makers Dulmatin and Umar
Patek, believed to be hiding in the southern
Philippines.

The duo masterminded the 2002 Bali bombings
that killed more than 200 people.

The US has tagged the Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah
Islamiyah as foreign terrorist organizations. (Al
Jacinto)

LOL, you have chosen a good dog, I had one, KING, fantastic dog, came from the pound.

Would go out the upstairs windows and guard the house from the roof...

The neighbors said it was a regular patrol, with all areas of the property checked.

My daughter, a teenager, had a boyfriend, that I did not want in the house, King made sure he left soon, I would come home and see a wet spot in front of the couch.

Seems he would wet on the boys feet, for setting too close to my daughter, which got rid of the boy.......

There was no way that King would leave a wet spot in the house, not even if he had to knock you out of the way when the door opened, except when 'that' boy visited..

Someone stole him.

So when you hug Clyde, for me, call him King.

Military Attachés from 60 Nations Discuss Counterterrorism

Partnerships, communications strategies needed for success

Washington –- Further progress in the Global War on Terror will require nations to develop strategies to better inform their
publics and to garner public support for anti-terror programs, says Lieutenant General Dell Dailey, commander of the U.S.
Special Operations Command (SOCOM).

Dailey spoke to military officers and attachés from 60 nations who met in Florida in October to discuss regional and
national counterterrorism efforts.

Terrorism is “a global problem that recognizes no borders … violates the sovereignty of all … nations and … must be
combated individually and collectively,” Dailey said.  He said the next level on the global War on Terror will require nations
to develop individualized strategies with which to communicate to their publics about the problem, as well as find ways to
enlist public support for anti-terrorism programs.  [Note: The United States has done this through its Rewards for Justice
program. (See related article.)].

SOCOM and the U.S. Strategic Command hosted 80 participants for the two-day multinational workshop held at MacDill
Air Force Base October 18-20.  They heard SOCOM’s Colonel John Davis point out that global partnerships make it
possible “to plan, execute and sustain effective counterterrorist networks.”  Successful counterterrorist initiatives, he said,
depend “on the total integration of all our partner nations’ capabilities.”  Such partnership, he added, is critical for the
success of the global war against terrorism.

Workshop attendees from every region of the world participated in sessions to discuss how to influence individuals who
may be considering committing acts of terrorism, as well as how to share information about various counterterrorist
initiatives and programs offering rewards for information.  Dailey said the goal was to spark a frank dialogue.

Lieutenant Commander Steve Mavica, SOCOM’s media relations officer, deemed the workshop a success because
participants gained a better understanding of effective U.S. anti-terror strategies.  Discussions of cultural differences and
their effect on perceptions also led to suggestions on ways the United States can improve its own performance, he said.

Participants heard SOCOM officials outline a Global Rewards Information Program, also known as GRIP.  Mavica said
some participants suggested that the program be renamed because the concept of a “reward” for information leading to the
apprehension of terrorist can have a negative connotation in some cultures.

An individual who provides such information might be compensated in different parts of the world, for example, by money,
land, a job or relocation.  Individual programs thus could be tailored according to whatever works best in that nation or
region.  In some cultures, for example, providing tips about terrorists is considered a civic duty and the idea of offering a
reward is thought to be offensive.

Workshop participants also listened to presentations about the global Jihad movement.  SOCOM’s public diplomacy
adviser, Stanley Schrager, told the St. Petersburg Times that the ideological attraction that terrorism has for some recruits
cannot be addressed militarily.  “It’s a war of ideology and it’s a war for the hearts and minds of people,” he told reporter
Alexandra Zayas.  (See related article.)

One Singaporean said the United States has to make a bigger investment in the Muslim world.  Rohan Gunaratna, director
of the International Center for Political Violence and Terrorism Research, said that statistical analysis shows that less than 1
percent of the Muslim population supports terrorism.  Gunaratna said he believes defeating terrorist groups and their
supporters requires the complete support from the entire Muslim population.

Information about the U.S. Rewards for Justice program is available on the program Web site.
