The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

In Texas prairie dogs carry black Plague, 9 banded armadillos carry
leprosy, coyotes carry rabies, birds carry bird flu and lime disease, mice
carry marburg fever. We are taught as small children to stay away from
wildlife, especially if sick, dying, or dead.<<<<<<<

You offer very good advise, in this day and age, it is unsafe to do any of the things that I did as a child.....

I would say today, that any animal that will allow a strange person to approach it, is a danger, even dogs and cats.

Date: Sat 1 Oct 2005 From: Pablo Nart Source: MyTelus.com, Canadian Press Health News, Fri 30 Sep 2005 [edited] _____________________________________________________________ Canada: Outbreak of HTLV-1 Infection in Nunavut ----------------------------------------------- Nunavut health officials have begun a territory-wide search for people infected with a rare cancer-causing blood virus, after discovering an outbreak of HTLV-1 [human T-lymphotropic virus 1] infection. ------------------------------------- "Nobody knows" how widespread the infection is, said Dr. Isaac Sobol, Nunavut's Chief Medical Officer of Health. "So far, we've identified several people -- less than 20 -- who test positive." HTLV-1 is a retrovirus in the same family as HIV, the virus believed to cause AIDS. ------------------------------------- The vast majority of people infected with HTLV-1 show no symptoms, said Dr. Sobol. But for about 5 percent of those infected, the virus can cause degenerative nerve disease leading to loss of control of the legs and bladder. It can also cause blood cancers, including leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Like HIV, it is most commonly spread through unprotected sex and blood-to-blood contact, such as sharing needles. An infected woman can also pass it on to her fetus, as well as to her child during breast-feeding. ------------------------------------- There is no cure for HTLV-1 infection. Symptoms take between 10 to 20 years to appear. Nunavut's 1st case of HTLV-1 was discovered in June 2005 in a person with leukemia, Sobol said. Despite the more than 3 months between the diagnosis and Friday's [30 Sep 2005] public announcement, Sobol said he doubts there have been any new infections. "We began our intervention as soon as we learned of the presence of this virus," he said. "Our 1st priority was to assist those persons infected with the virus and contact tracing. We've been doing intensive work with the individuals involved, and we've been doing our contact tracing. I believe we've taken all reasonable steps to protect the public at this time." --------------------------------------- Since the virus was found, all blood samples taken in Nunavut have been tested for HTLV-1. That testing will continue until officials can properly assess its prevalence in the territory, although because those tests are anonymous, they won't identify individual carriers. Confidential, free tests will be available to anyone in Nunavut who asks for one, Sobol said. Getting a fix on the virus's spread is likely to take about 6 months. Sobol released few other details about the outbreak, refusing to say whether it was confined to one community or describe the health of the other carriers. HTLV-1 is so rare in Canada that it's not a reportable disease in many jurisdictions, said Health Canada spokesman Julian Beltrame. The last outbreak in memory was in 1993, when 3 people were found with HTLV-1 in British Columbia. ------------------------------------ The Canadian Blood Service, which has screened for HLTV-1 since 1990, reports that, out of roughly 900 000 blood donations received every year, only 10 or 12 are found contaminated with HLTV-1. The virus, however, is endemic in other parts of the world, including Southern Japan, the Caribbean, Papua New Guinea and some parts of Africa. In Nunavut, health-care providers have been briefed to give blood tests and advice. The federal Public Health Agency and National Virology Lab in Winnipeg will also be providing testing resources and advice, Sobol said. HTLV-1 testing will also be added to prenatal screening tests. --------------------------------------- -- ProMED-mail [The viruses originally known as human T-lymphotropic viruses have been re-designated primate T-lymphotropic viruses in recognition of their prevalence in non-human primates as well as humans. Human T-lymphotropic virus 1 and simian T-lymphotropic virus 1 are closely related and now ranked as members of the same virus species: _Primate T-lymphotropic virus ---------------------------------- 1_. Likewise, Human T-lymphotropic virus 2 and simian T-lymphotropic 2 virus are ranked now as members of the same species: _Primate T-lymphotropic virus 2. Recently, 2 more species have been identified in the Cameroons (see: Primate T-lymphotropic viruses 3 & 4, human - Cameroon 20050226.0610). ----------------------------------- All 4 primate T-lymphotropic viruses, together with the species bovine leukemia virus, make up the genus _Deltaretrovirus_, one of the 7 genera that comprise the family of reverse-transcribing viruses know as the _Retroviridae_. ---------------------------------- The deltaretroviruses are transmitted horizontally, and no endogenous counterparts are known. So far, they have been found only in bovines and primates. They are associated with B- or T-cell leukemias or lymphomas, and neurological disease (tropical spastic paraparesis or HTLV-associated myopathy). --------------------------------------- HTLV-1 was isolated 1st from a cell line derived from splenic cells taken from a patient suffering from a hairy cell leukemia, now considered to be a fortuitous association. No oncogene-containing members of the genus are known. HTLV-2 is endemic among several Amerindian populations in North, Central and South America. In industrialized countries, HTLV-2 is prevalent among drug abusers and is spread by contaminated needles and by heterosexual transmission. In the developing world, breast-feeding may be the predominant route of transmission. Biologically, the HTLVs differ from HIV in their greater genetic stability and their characteristic patterns of geographic distribution. ------------------------------------ Previously, it was thought that the present distribution of HTLV-2 in the world reflected its possible introduction into the New world at the time of the initial settlement of the American continent by the ancestors of the present day native Americans some 20 000 to 40 000 years ago, followed by more recent dissemination from one or a few centers. It seems more likely now that all 4 primate T-lymphotropic viruses were transmitted to humans from African primates. It is likely that HTLV-1 was introduced into Nunavut Territory by a blood-borne or sexual route. - Mod.CP] ________________________________________________________________ [see also: Primate T-lymphotropic viruses 3 & 4, human - Cameroon 20050226.0610 2003 ---- Intl Congr Infect Dis - Mexico (Cancun): 4-7 Mar 2004 20031105.2744 2001 ---- Simian foamy virus, humans - Canada 20010630.1245 2000 ---- HTLV-II, brain disorder - Brazil 20000820.1382 1996 ---- Gorgas Course in Clinical Tropical Medicine - Peru 19960422.0764 1995 ---- Course: Clinical Tropical Medicine 19951031.0996] ...............................cp/msp/dk

U.S., Iraqi Soldiers Bag Big Ammo, Weapons Caches

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Oct. 2, 2005 – American soldiers today discovered and seized a cache of munitions buried in a field near Balad, Iraq, Multinational Force Iraq officials said today.
The cache included roughly 650 28mm-caliber and more than 950 .50-caliber rounds. The cache was taken to a coalition forces' base for disposal, officials said.

And, Iraqi Army troops nabbed three insurgents Oct. 1 in Fallujah after the insurgents' improvised explosive device blew up prematurely.

Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 1st Iraqi Intervention Force responded to a report of an explosion by coalition forces. Upon arrival, troops found one terrorist dead and two others wounded, officials said.

The wounded insurgents were taken to a medical facility for treatment. Officials said the bomb's composition was undetermined.

In Baghdad, a 60-year-old male security detainee recently died at Forward Operating Base Abu Ghraib, officials said. The medical staff noticed that the detainee appeared to be ill and took him to the medical facility.

The medical staff determined that the detainee was hypoglycemic and provided medical care, officials said. Soon after, it was determined he was in renal failure, and surgery was then performed.

The detainee went into cardiac arrest while in the intensive care unit and died after all life-saving efforts failed to resuscitate him, officials said. He was pronounced dead by an attending physician.

The remains will be transferred to the family upon completion of an autopsy, in accordance with standard procedure, officials said.

In other developments, in north Baghdad, Iraqi Army and U.S. soldiers found five weapons caches on Sept. 30.

U.S. combat engineers from the 70th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division made the largest haul of enemy ordnance at a house in north Baghdad, officials said.

The Americans also captured two suspected terrorists. In just over two hours the engineers found three weapons caches yielding nine missiles, seven rocket launchers, 20 rockets, 69 mortar rounds, more than 300 rocket-propelled grenades and 119 hand grenades.

The engineers also seized an assortment of artillery rounds and bomb-making materials, including 53 detonators, 42 time fuses, three machine guns, several types of rifles, scopes, pistols and ammunition, officials reported.

The same day, Iraqi soldiers from 1st Battalion, 1st Brigade, 9th Iraqi Army Division (Mechanized) found a fourth weapons cache while patrolling in north Baghdad. Officials said the cache consisted of 20 mortar rounds and bomb-making materials, including five pounds of plastic explosives, one box of rocket fuses, cut lengths of wire, two remote-controlled detonation devices and an instruction book on how to build bombs.

Minutes later that day in a different area of north Baghdad, a U.S. patrol found the fifth cache, officials said. The cache contained five bombs consisting of mortar rounds already wired with detonation cord, three RPG launchers with 12 RPGs, plastic explosives, three AK-47 assault rifles, a pistol and ammunition.

Coalition forces also found two improvised explosive devices. One of the bombs was an anti-tank mine connected to a radio, and the other bomb was two artillery rounds attached to a telephone. In both cases, the soldiers cordoned off the area to keep people away while explosives experts were notified to dispose of the bombs safely.

'Iron Fist' Offensive Pummels Terrorists In Iraq

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Oct. 2, 2005 – The first day of Operation Kabda Bil Hadid, or "Iron Fist" in English, saw several successful engagements against al Qaeda in Iraq terrorists operating in and around Sadah, approximately 12 kilometers east of the Syrian border, Multinational Force Iraq officials reported Oct. 1.
The operation continues with a force of approximately 1,000 U.S. Marines, soldiers and sailors from Regimental Combat Team 2. Coalition forces, including helicopters from 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, engaged and killed eight armed terrorists in fighting early Oct. 1, officials said.

During another engagement, terrorists drove two vehicles near a U.S. Marine position, dismounted and attacked with small-arms fire, officials said. One of the vehicles was rigged with explosives. The gun battle left four terrorists dead, and the fifth surrendered to the Marines.

In the late morning, Marines discovered and destroyed a roadside bomb on the outskirts of Sadah, officials reported. Shortly afterward, an American M1A1 tank destroyed a vehicle car bomb with one round from its main gun southwest of the city.

North of Sadah, U.S. forces killed three al Qaeda terrorists after the group attacked their checkpoint with small-arms fire, officials said.

The eighth terrorist was killed when an AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter destroyed a vehicle after its driver fired on a Marine position with a rocket-propelled grenade, officials reported. Another vehicle traveling with the attacker was seen to be carrying additional RPGs and was destroyed by missile fire from the Cobra. The driver and passenger escaped the blast.

No U.S. Marine casualties have been reported.

Iron Fist's goal is to root out al Qaeda in Iraq terrorists operating in the region and disrupt terrorist support systems in and around Sadah, officials said.

The offensive is part of an overall operation called Sayaid, or "Hunter" in English, which is intended to deny al Qaeda terrorists in Iraq the ability to operate freely in the Euphrates River Valley. It also aims to prevent them from influencing the local population through murder and intimidation, officials said.

No Fort Henry and Ticonderoga are due north on Champlain. Lake George is where the boat accident occurred.

But there are plenty of George names in geography and university listings.
