(09-30) 10:56 PDT Irvine, Calif. (AP) --
Marilyn Brewer, a leading Republican candidate for the nation's only open House seat, stared into the TV camera and proclaimed her support for the president.
She was not talking about George W. Bush.
"I stand side by side with Ronald Reagan on less taxes and less government," Brewer told voters at a candidate forum.
The former state assemblywoman also praised Nancy Reagan for her devotion to stem cell research, an issue that has bedeviled the Bush White House. And she touts as her prize endorsement Sen. John McCain, the president's sometime rival and critic.
Not a word about Bush.
Later, the self-described loyal Republican who voted for the president in 2004 explained her calculus: "If the election was this year ... he would not be re-elected."

Maybe not, but he should. A message needs to be sent to the Republicans that we're sick of their winking at illegal immigration and spending like drunken sailors. Gilchrist will send that message and become a strong force in Congress for Republicans to start taking illegal immigration seriously. We should be insulted by how Republicans are ignoring this. And trust me, NO ONE HAS BEEN MORE STAUNCHLY REPUBLICAN and ANTI-THIRD PARTY THAN ME. But by God I've had it.
So she's pro abortion and pro enviro huh???
She sounds like a RINO to me
Clever strategy. She's trying to cobble together a coalition of RINOs and Democrats to make her way into the runoff. I don't think it will work. Cambell's many years of pounding the proverbial pavement on shows like Hugh Hewitt will soon pay their dividends.
Smart!
Oops! I didn't read that far. LOL! Shame on me. Well, I withdraw my first statement about her being smart.
More lies from the AP. Bush is not opposed to stem cell research - he is opposed to embryonic stem cell research. Once again, the media works to make sure the public thinks there is no difference.
Yep .. he quoted Reagan Big Time
Why can't folks see what is really going on?
Because some people have an ongoing argument with Bush, have personally declared Reagan an icon airbrushing away any flaws he may have had, and think if a Republican comes out endorsing Reagan and shutting Bush out they have a champion. Finally, a REAL Republican with the guts to stand up to Bush yada yada...
This is what they want Republicans to do and they've admitted it in so many words. They want Republicans to defeat Bush and pass THEIR narrowed agenda without thought to the consequence if the President goes down, WE go down, and NO conservative agenda stands a chance at passage. It'd be the open doorway for the RINO's to seize power, not vice versa with conservatives in charge.
Many of these people tried to convince us not to vote for him in the last election. They lost in 2000, and 2004, and they haven't gotten over it so this is their latest attempt to defeat him.
Just as the "purists" in the Democrat Party want their leaders to break, not with a leader because they have no leader, but with the last thread of sanity that states supporting vocal solidarity with the terrorists is just 'not done'. They want a prominent Democrat to be their champion. Their Cindy Sheehan, only in elected office, and Conyers isn't good enough. It has to be someone like Hillary Clinton.
In my experience, someone that states they are a Reagan Republican is usually anything but. They are using his reputation to put them in office, or attempt it. A real conservative stands on their own ideology and has no need to offer Reagan as a reference if they've the record to back up their conservatism.
As well, if someone claims to admire Reagan, denounces Bush, and praises McCain, this should send up red flags to anyone that isn't blinded by an agenda against Bush.
California = Reagan.
No shock here.
Campbell is pretty light on the immigration issue in my opinion!
The democrats are probably licking their chops, hoping the Republican vote gets split three ways, between Campbell (R), Brewer (R) and Gilchrist (I).
Campbell has the most money, and is the natural heir. Scott Baugh and Dana Rohrabacher support Campbell.
Campbell is like many country club Republicans--tough on illigal immigration, rhetorically, when they need to lay down some quotes. His position now, as a candidate, sounds good.
Too bad Gilchrist couldn't go to a district where he could easily get elected, instead of mucking this election up, possibly opening the door to a democrat.
In terms of probability, Brewer is the LEAST likely to prevail. She comes in fourth, behind Campbell, Gilchrist, the democrat.
Thanks. :-)
I'm not even sure the Republicans in California know who they are or what they stand for.
I DID support Arnold for Governor, and will support his re-election, but that was a political calculation that he was better than Gray Davis. He did VETO the driver's license bill. He did VETO the gay marriage bill. He is challenging the unions. Also, I calculated that McClintock could not survive the allegiance Dems/Indy's have in Cali election day. Sort of like New Jersey. Folks are disgusted with the Dems, they flirt doing something about it, then they fail election day for the "D".
Why did the politicos in the Republican Party support him? Because he was a famous actor with star appeal. Their motivations were different then mine.
There are some good people representing in California but it lacks a cohesive message and leader. You would think Arnold as Gov would give them a platform to bring their ideas to the table, if not all to fruition, but they haven't capitalized on the elevation of the party through his election. to their detriment. They are wasting a golden opportunity to begin to break the Dem bonds.
Any politician that does that, and invokes the support of Ronald Reagan is a wolf in sheep's clothing.
This is California we're talking about.
Same here with Arnold....definitely a RINO, but better a RINO than an open border Democrat...like Bustamental!
This is a Gilchrist-Campbell contest.
Even Campbell knows it.
That's why he agreed to a mano a mano debate with Jim the night before the election (this Monday evening) on KFI, on the John and Ken Show.
If Campbell's high-priced consultants weren't watching a complete meltdown of his numbers, they wouldn't have agreed to such a debate in a zillion years. They wouldn't have even uttered the Minuteman's name.
FReepers who count Jim Gilchrist out don't have a clue about the actual situation on the ground here in OC.
Campbell has run from every local forum and debate up til now...and he's paying a heavy political price.
His 'allies' have demonstrated nothing but heavy-handedness, arrogance and stupidity.
And meanwhile, the Minutemen continues to recruit 48th District voters in droves.
Republican voters.
In all likelihood, this is a match-rematch situation. Gilchrist-Campbell on Tuesday, followed by round two on December 6th.
And Jim Gilchrist, the founder of the Minuteman Project, has the MO.
This is Orange County we're talking about.
Based on what a RINO twit who doesn't have a snowball's chance in Hell of winning says?
Another "Donner Party Republican" looking for a pass.
