(09-30) 10:56 PDT Irvine, Calif. (AP) --
Marilyn Brewer, a leading Republican candidate for the nation's only open House seat, stared into the TV camera and proclaimed her support for the president.
She was not talking about George W. Bush.
"I stand side by side with Ronald Reagan on less taxes and less government," Brewer told voters at a candidate forum.
The former state assemblywoman also praised Nancy Reagan for her devotion to stem cell research, an issue that has bedeviled the Bush White House. And she touts as her prize endorsement Sen. John McCain, the president's sometime rival and critic.
Not a word about Bush.
Later, the self-described loyal Republican who voted for the president in 2004 explained her calculus: "If the election was this year ... he would not be re-elected."

If she's for smaller, less intrusive government, it goes without saying that she's more like Reagan and less like Bush.
She's one of the top RINOs in California. This race is going to come down to her and Campbell. Gilchrist will probably draw off enough votes to hand it to Brewer who will pick up crossover Dems (special election) and RINOs votes.
Democrats in the 48th might want a Democrat representing them in Congress, but in the real world of politics, we need Marilyn Brewer to be the highest Republican vote getter. Act accordingly.

LOL, the media just can't wait to grab hold of stories like this claiming everyone is against Bush. This woman deserves to lose the election if she's this big of a coward and in an overwhelmingly Republican district. And to go and hand the media feces another opportunity to beat Bush over the head, she ought to be ashamed. Maybe she ought to look at the internals on these polls that are making her run like a scared rabbit and see that they disproportionately over-represent Democrats. The last thing we need is anothing poll-deceived twit in Congress. Jim Gilchrist deserves to win this seat.
Say hello to your legacy George.
"The former state assemblywoman also praised Nancy Reagan for her devotion to stem cell research,"
Oh yeah, that'll bring conservatives running. LOL
The nation's only open House seat? Somehow I doubt that.
So siding with Ronald W. Reagan is now a cowardly act?
Are you sane?
Yeah, everybody claims the Reagan mantle, even democrats do it.
It's gutless and phoney. Where's her proof that she;s a conservative? Where's her record?
Right now, Pelosi could claim to be the next Reagan. Would she fool you too?
It's pretty bad when both conservatives and RINOs are pissed at the Pres. And I thought GWB and Rove and all the political geniuses there had figured out how to make everyone in America love Bush? Hmmm...maybe they aren't geniuses after all.
Now...as much as I don't care for the Bush administration's profoundly non-conservative domestic agenda, I would add that if this dame is a liberal on social issues, then she ain't no Reagan tax cutter and hawk on spending.
If someone is a liberal on social issues, then they are going to betray you on fiscal issues, also. There are no part-RINOs out there. That's my opinion, at least.
The former state assemblywoman also praised Nancy Reagan for her devotion to stem cell research, an issue that has bedeviled the Bush White House. And she touts as her prize endorsement Sen. John McCain, the president's sometime rival and critic.
For these two reasons, she's a RINO.
Gilchrist is THIRD PARTY..he will not win
She will most certanly lose...this sort of thing never works
With Jim Gilchrist in the race, we have lost the seat anyway. This is one "Republican" we really don't need. It's not up to me, I don't live in the district or the state, but if I did this would be one rino who have to get elelected without me. If she is a cancer now, she'll be worse in Congress. I wish Gilchrist could win, but that aint happening.

Ethics cited in Brewer censure
September 29, 2005
The Orange County Republican Party on Wednesday censured 48th District Congressional candidate Marilyn Brewer for making several false claims about GOP opponent John Campbell, including that he day-traded energy stocks during the state's energy crisis, said Orange County GOP chairman Scott Baugh.
He said the party's ethics committee also found that Brewer violated ethics rules with campaign mailers about Campbell's position on stem cell research and his record on illegal immigration and a mailer that mentions the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers' Assn., which has endorsed Campbell.
Brewer could not be reached for comment late Wednesday.
The decision was the result of a complaint by Campbell, Baugh said. Brewer also was warned by the county GOP's ethics committee in 1994 following a complaint from Thomas G. Reinecke, whom she beat in a primary in her first race for the state Assembly.
In that case, she was admonished by the party; Baugh said being censured is more severe.
"Part of the report to me was that it's happened before and that affected the level" of the reproof, he said.
The party took no further action, so the finding is essentially a political tool to keep candidates in line. An egregious ethics breach could potentially get a person booted from the party's Central Committee, Baugh said, "but you can't kick somebody out of a party."
Earlier Wednesday, Campbell dismissed Brewer's statements about him as "flat out lying."
"It's disgusting and the people should absolutely reject it," Campbell said.
If she's proud of an endorsement by McCain, it goes without saying she is a political opportunist and NOTHING like Reagan.
My problem wasn't her siding with Ronald Reagan. My problem was with her siding AGAINST President Bush and making that assinine comment she made about his not getting re-elected. She could have commented on Bush's strong leadership in the war on terror. Do you REALLY think the people of Newport Beach would have held that against her? Without Bush, we would not have gained a wider majority in the House and Senate last year. For this ungrateful little shrew to not at least recognize that makes her unworthy of the party's support.
And before you question my sanity, question your own intelligence if what you got out of my post was that I had a problem with her speaking up in favor of Ronald Reagan, who himself wasn't exactly the best on illegal immigration or deficits either.
No it's not! I think you're confusing GWB's legacy with Bill Clinton's non-legacy.
Kerry sided with Reagan during his election campaign. The Democrats were all pretending to be his biggest fan.
Sorry.
If some "conservatives" are so easily fooled because she bashes the President and invokes Reagan, they deserve what they get.
Cheering an endorsement by McCain, support of stem cells, and making clear she thinks the President wouldn't have been elected this year tell me everything I need to know about the woman. She's a RINO making a political calculation. She is NO Reagan Republican.
