Witnesses: New Orleans cops took Rolex watches, jewelry Police probed in looting

NEW ORLEANS (CNN) -- Four New Orleans police officers have been suspended and one has been reassigned over allegations of looting in the chaos after Hurricane Katrina, acting Police Superintendent Warren Riley said.

The city's police department is investigating reports that at least 12 police officers may have gone on a looting spree in the days after the storm hit.

The probe began after police officials reviewed videos from news reports, Riley said.

"The investigation does show police officers with some items," Riley said, but some of the officers took essential items such as food and clothing, which they needed to carry out their jobs.

Meanwhile, Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti Jr. acknowledged his office was investigating "two separate incidents of potential looting by law enforcement" but would not identify the jurisdictions involved.

The officers are alleged to have taken non-essential items like televisions or jewelry or to not have acted against looting.

Riley promised "swift and decisive action" against any violators, saying, "There is zero tolerance for misconduct or unprofessionalism by any member of this department."

His announcement of the probe came two days after the abrupt resignation of Police Superintendent Eddie Compass. Mayor Ray Nagin named Riley to replace him.

On Friday, New Orleans District Attorney Eddie Jordan said Compass' resignation did not appear to be linked to the looting investigation.

Sooner or later....we will all have to arm ourselves and become more "self reliant"..

Our founding fathers KNEW what they were doing, when they revolted against the "King" and wrote our Constitution...

What amazes me, is how most "talking heads" in the media, snarl when they say the word "vigilante"...

I would suggest they think more carefully on the matter..

Didn't Bush hire these cops? Once again, it's all Bush's fault!

I read a couple of reports quoting residents of non flooded areas, who saw the police kicking in doors to empty houses and coming out with everything they could carry, when they were reported, they were told to forget about what they saw.

What happened to the story of 500 missing police officers as reported by the FBI??

That's what I would like to know? Tony Snow is normally a very accurate reporter and I haven't heard him say that he got the story wrong. It seems to me that the 'phantom cops' scandal should be on the front pages everywhere??????

Thanks !! My wife and I had a little jewelry store from Nov93-Jan04. You would not have believed the number of Ro-ex's I put batteries in. I have to admit that some of the automatic Ro-ex's that I did other repairs on (shorten or add links to the bands, etc) were really GOOD replicas.

Back in the early 80's those things were every where, and as you said some were pretty convincing, as long as you didn't look at the movement. I've got ss Submariner and a Tudor Cosmograph, both are 80's models, not bad watches, That Submariners tough as nails.

The hotel's owner, Osman Khan, told CNN that on the night of August 29, when the city flooded, 70 police officers had moved into his Canal Street hotel. He said that 62 went out to fight looters and thugs on the streets, while eight launched a four-day drinking and looting binge.

"They'd leave [at] nine or 10 at night and come back 4:30 in the morning," carrying "everything from Adidas shoes to Rolex watches," Khan said.

Unless Mr. Kahn is a jeweler and the cops gave him time to examine the booty, I suspect that the loot did not include Rolexes. that would require me to believe that a jewelry store or Pawn shop owner would leave the shop with unsecured Rolexes. Sorry, but those go in a box carried to the car out of town, or int the safe. I doubt those NO cops were safe crackers.

(Just introducing a dose of common sense, for those who are eager to believe all the rumors that come from this story.)

I have been wondering the same thing. Who was getting that money and what, if anything, is going to happen to ALL those involved? All we keep hearing is more and more corruption coming out with Video/pictures, eye witnessed by millions of Americans who own TV's, of cops committing crimes and hearing about the ghost cops, yet very little is being done. I suspect, just like a lot of stuff going on in that city, it will be covered up and we will be left wondering and those responsible will continue to hold their official positions just so they can continue to get those paychecks of the police officers who do not exist.
