Witnesses: New Orleans cops took Rolex watches, jewelry Police probed in looting
NEW ORLEANS (CNN) -- Four New Orleans police officers have been suspended and one has been reassigned over allegations of looting in the chaos after Hurricane Katrina, acting Police Superintendent Warren Riley said.
The city's police department is investigating reports that at least 12 police officers may have gone on a looting spree in the days after the storm hit.
The probe began after police officials reviewed videos from news reports, Riley said.
"The investigation does show police officers with some items," Riley said, but some of the officers took essential items such as food and clothing, which they needed to carry out their jobs.
Meanwhile, Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti Jr. acknowledged his office was investigating "two separate incidents of potential looting by law enforcement" but would not identify the jurisdictions involved.
The officers are alleged to have taken non-essential items like televisions or jewelry or to not have acted against looting.
Riley promised "swift and decisive action" against any violators, saying, "There is zero tolerance for misconduct or unprofessionalism by any member of this department."
His announcement of the probe came two days after the abrupt resignation of Police Superintendent Eddie Compass. Mayor Ray Nagin named Riley to replace him.
On Friday, New Orleans District Attorney Eddie Jordan said Compass' resignation did not appear to be linked to the looting investigation.

I'm quite sure that every cop that stole one left an IOU behind.
My friend have Ro-ex. Him no have numbers, but he like long time but say eat many batteries....
Rolex? Former Democrat Senator from NJ has a Rolex.
I remember during the disaster they was showing some cop in a squad car. I think he was crying or something but I noticed his gold watch on his arm and thought that is too nice a watch for a cop to afford or at least wear everyday.
Of course Geraldo was busy telling us that the cops was underpaid even though they started out paid more than the soldiers and Coast Guardsmen helping them.
Sensitivity training from the Nation of Islam! The very idea brings out a chuckle. ;-)
I want to know more about the cops that didnt exist and where were their paychecks going??????
Rolex Rolex Rolex!!!! Were I a thief I'd leave the Rolex section alone and head for the Vacheron Constantins or the Audemar Piguets. Or at the very least a Hublot. Goodness, even a base Panerai would be better than a Rolex (although the Cellini line of Rolexes, for example the Cellini Danaos and Cellini Cestello, do well in the after-sales market ....and they are not as gaudy as the oysters). Although I guess these perps simply want to wear them and 'impress their friends and awe their enemies.' Or maybe pawn them for a K or two at some pawn shop in the next state! Thus a Rolex would work for them.
AndI guess to those thieves the Rolex timepieces were the pinacle of horology, or maybe the stores they were raiding simply peaked (when it came to watches) at the Rolex level.
All the same I hope they catch the perps responsible.
I am hoping that the longer the "investigations", et al., go on, the more scandal and corruption is exposed. Nattering Nabob Nagin, Governor Blank-head, and Mary (I am queen of the bayou) Lan-drool will regret the day they opened their mouths.
My birthday is today. My husband bought me a Rolex -- Cellini. It is beautiful and very plain. Very slim with a black leather band. I'm a really good wife!
Is it really true that Farakan's people trained the NOLA police department??? I know Lt. Gov. Landrieu got a bill passed that is basically a turn the other cheek bill for crime....
The police chief tried to get the Nation of Islam to do it, but because of the public outcry it was not done.
Beautiful watch. And you are truly loved. Be blessed PB.
Thank you so much for the lovely card.
If true, they're going to need a lot of new policemen in New Orleans..
Semper Fi
Now thats funny
"..at least 12 police officers may have gone on a looting spree.."
Those must be the twelve who didn't clear out with their families before the Hurricane struck.
This is a scary turn of affairs. With stringent hiring practices we can't attract officers because they get so little support from the lib's... lowering standards endangers us all -- just as it did the good citizens in NOLA.
It seems like most people have a blind spot when it comes to treating any collection of people as an abstract think with universal and monolithic properties. It doesn't matter if someone it talking about police officers, fire fighters, corporations, the government, churches, teachers, or whatever. Like Soylent Green, they are all made up of people and some of those people may be good and some of them may be bad. It's always dangerous to assume otherwise.
