As we slip into deep sleep, higher regions of our brains take a vacation from each other, disconnecting so much that consciousness is snuffed out and a once highly integrated organ becomes separated, according to a groundbreaking experiment by University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers.

This is why God invented "coffee".
And probably a spinoff to the next unnecessary "Matrix" sequal.
Yes, until those neurons reconnect, at which point, the mind becomes more free thinking, i.e. conservative.
BTW, Jen used to say some pretty bizarre things in her sleep that would make Bridgette crack up for weeks on end. You need to ask her about them sometime.
Usually, when you sleep and dream... Most of the time dreams hardly ever make any sense, and you think and do things that you would never do in real life! Their brains probably NEVER reconnect when they're awake making ALL their thoughts incoherent and nonsensical!
The DUmmies are missing the brain reconnect that normal people get when they wake up!! The mystery has been SOLVED!
Bookmark bump... Interesting.
The sites that want you to register can bite me, though.
Why harass someone who made it easier for others?
Methinks if it were YOUR copyrighted article, you'd be singing a different tune.
Some of the responders here have confused deep sleep with dream sleep. The phnemenon reported here happens during deep sleep, not dream sleep (which itself is closer to consciousness.)
Not sure why you decided to act so bitchy on this thread, perhaps you need more sleep?
That's probably closer. We've known for a long time that the motor functions are inhibited somehow during REM sleep, mostly, usually.
The article speculates that the brain will be found "not disconnected" during REM sleep, but I doubt it, although it might be found only partially synced.
Since the brain, while it has specialized areas, also seems to be somewhat distributed in it's functioning, I'd speculate that during sleep, the nature of the synchronization of the various parts is inhibited somehow. Perhaps so each part can do it's own thing in regards to repair and general clean up and organization of the days inputs.
Yeah, a little club in the big evo club.
With the TEENSY LITTLE difference being the amount of oxygen the brain is getting... sounds like new age hog wash to me.
I always manage to get a good night's sleep, but I do like to have a big bowl of bitchy for breakfast every morning.
