WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 - President Bush is close to naming a successor to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and could announce his choice this week, Republicans close to the White House said Wednesday.
One name that was the source of enormous speculation in Washington legal and political circles was Harriet E. Miers, the White House counsel, who is a leader in the search for Justice O'Connor's successor. Ms. Miers, 60, was the first woman to become a partner at a major Texas law firm and the first woman to be president of the State Bar of Texas. At one point, Ms. Miers was Mr. Bush's personal lawyer.

That's what Bush did last time.
Anyone else think the DeLay indictment timing is suspect? People keep saying it is to damage the GOP for mid-term elections, but I have to wonder if it is to rattle Bush over the next SCOTUS nominee. After all, THIS is their last line of defense. They cannot afford to have a young, conservative justice make it to the bench. Put the squeeze on DeLay to throw the Administration into PR mode and to try to show them that you will go after the party leadership, even with lies, to destroy them.
I know it is a stretch, but these idiots are reaching for anything to hold onto, especially after Roberts took them to the woodshed in his confirmation hearings. Since Frist isn't from Tejas, DeLay is the next best target.
Just throwing it out there for thoughts.
Regardless, the GOP had better come out swinging or they will be skewered for years. I say nominate JRB, announce it at 9:00 tomorrow night and have Frist go immediately into the nuke option, don't even wait for the fillibuster. The dims & the MSM would be sent into a tailspin and JRB would be on the bench before they could pick their arses up off the floor.
Nevermind, I MUST be dreaming!
She only received a "qualified" from the ABA. Bush would have much more leverage on the Dems by appointing someone with a "well-qualified" rating like Luttig.
Don't forget Mike Hunt.
Bring it on, DemoCRAPS. Nuke option time ... and the President is at DEFCON 1.
------
Exactly - it is about time the professional troublemaking libs get a MAJOR dose of their own crap. Nuke 'em if they even say fillibuster.
Who is Luttig?
Let me clear it up.
She gave money to both Gore and Lloyd Benson in 1988 - not 2000.
Garza is a former Marine Captain.
Man it be nice to have a Marine on the SCOTUS.
SEMPER FI.
Luttig would be a good choice too, but I'm still hoping for Janice Rogers Brown.
LLoyd Benson? Who is that?
I was only 8 at the time so help me out here....
They predicted on the McLaughlin group that it will be a moderate. Bucannan piped in that Bush is finished if he nominates a moderate. I gotta agree, I'll be furious if it isn't a staunch conservative.
78 - 22
Roberts, one of the most qualified candidates for the USSC possible, received 22 votes against confirmation. This demonstrates the utter vacuousness of the Democrats when it comes to "bipartisanship." All but a tiny handful of Republicans voted against Ginsberg -- an ACLU Lawyer!!!!!!!!! Roberts deserved at least as many Democrat votes as Gisberg got Republican votes.
Agreed. There are lots of things for which I could forgive this President because he has been such a strong leader... but screwing up by appointing a "moderate" to SCOTUS would be unforgivable and immensely demoralizing.
Harriet E. Miers is not a conservative.
