(Hartford-AP, Sept. 29, 2005 6:02 AM) _ A state group that wants stricter immigration controls is calling for an investigation of whether McDonald's hires a high percentage of Hispanics.
But state officials and immigration activists are questioning the study that the group is using to bolster its claim.
Connecticut Citizens for Immigration Control yesterday released what co-founder Paul Streitz is calling a study of the ethnic makeup of the workforce at 152 McDonald's.
He claims that workers at McDonalds in New Haven and Fairfield counties are nearly 100 percent Hispanic. He says that raises the possibility that equal opportunity laws are being violated and undocumented workers are being hired.
But activists say his research methods were unsound and motivated by racism. Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has rejected Streitz's call for an investigation, saying the study is not reliable or relevant.
A couple of months ago, I went into a McDonalds in my supposedly white middle-class suburb. Almost all the employees were Hispanic, and the four customers in line in front of me were all Hispanic men wearing uniforms from the car wash next door. It appeared that only one of the Hispanic customers spoke English, and he was placing orders for the others. And when I go jogging in the evening, now there's always a group of Hispanic men playing soccer on the high school football field. Methinks the neighborhood is changing.
Exactly. One can guess that is why the study was put before the CT-AG. To drive home the impact of the existing racist "non-discrimination" law.
I guess the government should make available to fast-food restaurant managers statistics on the racial makeup of the surrounding community (specifically for the age range that most of the workers fall into) and then it's up to the employer to make sure his work force has the right percentages of each group. That would protect him against charges of racism. Of course, it might also mean that he has to shut down because no members of some racial groups are interested in working there.
I wrote a letter to McD's a few months ago on this subject and they responded that the restaurant in question was a franchise and I should contact them. No one was speaking English in the place except the one person on the counter.
What scares me about all the "hispanics" working in fast food joints is that if they are here illegally what kind of diseases do they have that they could easily pass on to the customers.
i worked for mcdonalds for 3 years in highschool, i recently got out of the Navy to go back to college. since there is a mcdonalds a few blocks from my house, i applied with intentions of finding job in my field later on. i did not get the job at mcdonalds!!! they had now hiring postings up, and i didnt ask for even more than minimum wage!! go figure, by the way, there is no worse feeling than to be turned down for a job by mcdonalds!
I was stunned to find that all the people in my upper middle class neighborhood, in my upper middle class home are hispanic. The neighborhood IS changing.
Necesito muchos cebollas, por favor!
I had that experience at McDonalds just yesterday....she was VERY polite and peppered the ordering process with "baby" and "honey"......
Nothing wrong with that. :)
My sister and brother-in-law own 5 McDonalds in the suburbs of Cincinnatti and they pay much higher than other franchises. Some of their employees have been with them 10 + years. But that is not the norm.
LOL
Celebrate diversity.
You can't swing a stick in McD's without hitting a pinata...couple that with Home Depot requiring spanish speaking applicants only...I'm fed up...
Twelve years ago, my neighborhood was about where yours is now. Looks like all those Californians who fled to WA State to escape the invasion are going to have to move again.
Good luck. You have my sympathy.
The government should keep its nose out of business hiring practices... and not require racist "affirmative action".
If the employer wants 100% Hispanice employees, then it should have them.
There is a difference between an illegal alien invasion and hispanics "movin' on up" to an upper middle or middle class neighborhood. You do know that, right? Many of our families were established in Texas before anyone else came along.
