Cape hurricane evacuee gives birth to a son (13th child)

Add another name to the list of residents at the Cape Cod military base where evacuees from Hurricane Katrina are staying. But this one didn't need a plane to get there.

Dionne White of New Orleans gave birth Tuesday at Falmouth Hospital to a boy whom she named Cape Cod Bannister, or C.C. for short. It's the first birth to an evacuee staying at Camp Edwards.

"I named him that because I love Cape Cod," White told The Boston Globe. "Coming here has been a big break for me. It's like Christmas, just a big old miracle. And you don't get that very often."

White, 37, has 12 other children, ranging in age from 3 to 21. Four of them with her.

Three others, an 11-year-old and 9-year-old twins, were at White's sister's house in New Orleans during the storm. White says she begged rescuers to take her to her sister's home several blocks away to get her other children, but they could not. Denise Monteiro, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Department of Social Services, said the children have not been found.

"I am just praying and praying they are OK," said White.

One of White's children is in jail, another is living in Texas, and three are in adoptive care in Louisiana, according to Massachusetts state officials.

White said she plans to remain in Massachusetts where, she said, "everyone treats you with love."

Monteiro said that two houses, one in Hingham and one in Boston, are being considered for White's family.

"We have never, ever, all of us been together," White said, "so, that's my dream, a nice big old house in Boston. And all 13 of my children."

Perched on her hospital bed, a blue plastic cross hanging from her neck, White tells of a life of hardship. She had her first baby at age 15, and by 18 she had four children. All four were taken by the state and put up for adoption, she says, although several were reunited with her when they became adults. Another three of her children were put up for adoption in later years. Asked about the seven who were adopted, White struggled to match names and ages, finally shaking her head sadly.

''I got so many children it's a doggone shame," she said.

IMO whats sad is that you can't match names & ages of only 13 children?

"I don't know about anyone else, but I am sick and tired of paying for a welfare system that breeds (no pun intended) this type of person.

As am I!! Seems that all the NO evacuees have become the govt's pet project. Talk about WELFARE, there is no end to what the govt appears to be providing for the NO evacuees.

Monteiro said that two houses, one in Hingham and one in Boston, are being considered for White's family.

Hingham is a very rich, white community south of Boston. the smallest home starts above $500,000. I am sure they will
welcome her and her "chllin" with open arms.

It would be a hoot to see the names of all of her 13 children.

How many are spelled correctly?

This woman needs to have her tubes tied...

can you say welfare mom?

SouthernBoyupNorth is right, in my opinion. The welfare system needs to be eliminated. Despite what Democrats want you to believe, most people are not hog-stupid ... they are simply following the incentives.

Take away the financial incentive to have babies without the ability to care for them (without fathers at home), and most people will make better decisions.

It's a wonder her legs haven't atrophied and withered away from being up in the air so often.

Nosmo King! Excellent!

I don't get the Roots Sibissi one though. Can you give it to me phonetically?

You know, besides the humorous aspect, what a terrible human toll welfare has inflicted. What are the odds any of these kids will turn out to be normal productive memebers of society?

They would have all been much better off fending for themselves.

It was in #10 above, and very easy to miss. I just happened to open it in a new window as I came down the page.

Given the fact that she lost seven of her children and still kept cranking out kids, it doesn't seem to be that merely taking away her benefits would have caused her to stop having babies. Had they sterilized her when she lost her first four children, they would have saved nine children from miserable, pointless lives.

We have some friends...a couple...who have just had their 9th child...

..all of their children are happy, healthy, well mannered, and the parents can name them all :^

He's an engineer, she's a stay at home mom....

..they're not getting one cent from welfare...

..granted, they probably don't eat out a lot, or buy too much that's frivolous...

..but they aren't dependent on the government to support them either.

And no doubt, my friend, the hard working dad .....is helping to support 'this welfare mom' with her 13 kids because he's honest, has a strong work ethic and pays taxes!

Something about an uneven playing field here :^(
