Vanity Rant: Just want The southern part of my state back not your paycheck. (Vanity)

Posted on 09/28/2005 1:24:31 PM PDT by Pointblank

When Florida was devestated 1-2-3-4 times last year, there was no complaints about the people of this nation assisting in the rebuild. Perhaps, that was due to the fact that many of the people who are now giving their negative opinions have summer homes in Perdido key rather than Pass Christian. I love MY country, and Perdido key, but I am disheartened that the people of this country feel the need to balk at idea of rebuilding the Mississippi Gulf coast (oh we forgot about that area?)just because you don't own a summer home down there, and there is only a few oil refineries. I guess the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I challange you nay-sayers to take a few days out of your lives to absorb the magnitude of the devesation. But don't go expecting to help, because the good people who ignored the press for 4 weeks, and the citizens of MS have "taken care of buisness". If you are lucky enough to find a place in the effort, I challange you to buy your own dinner (your money is no good in most resturants). Beer either...trust me.

If I ever pay another dollar in taxes...taxes which rebuilt Florida so many times, it will be because My great state was aided when it needed it most.

While Mississippi will rebuild regardless of one penny of Federal funds, it insults me that there is even an arguement of whether Mississippi is worth being rebuilt.

But as the poorest state in the nation, yet one of the most charitable, don't we deserve a bit of support from the people of "inland America" during our time of crisis?

To all of you who did assist in ANY way, I thank you from the deepest part of my heart.

Relax and take a pill. Billions of our tax dollars have already been allociated and we are all helping.

There is no discussion of not helping, it is the amount of help and where it should go and who controls it. These discussions are good and healthy.

We, the people in Florida, rebuilt the majority of our losses, after last years' and this years' hurricanes, with insurance money and not tax money! Because of that, certain insurers in this state will not cover homeowners or renters insurance.

Hmmm...I was under the impression that the COASTAL REGION of MS was devastated, not ALL of MS...

Do we need to rebuild the ENTIRE state? This message is a little bit misleading...and I surmise an attempt to elicit feelings of guilt from people who can not (realistically) help or those who are leery of all the scams out there from people who wish to benefit from others' tragedy...

I'd really rather not rebuild Mississippi. I'm sick of doing that.

Well I think its only rational to at least mention the fact that NOLA is below sea level and maybe now is a good time to re-think the scale of the rebuilding.

As far as charity, there have been a lot of donations of time and money, America is the most generous country on earth, especially when it comes to our own. That probably doesn't look like much, though, when Congress comes out a week later throwing numbers like $260 billion around before any assessment of damage could possibly have been done. Kind of makes the money collected around my office seem almost stupid.

Frankly I think most of us around here would be happier if a bit less of that money went to "The Big Easy" and a little MORE to hard-working Mississippi. Least y'all didn't turn around and point fingers in every which direction. Relax, we got'cher back.

Blame the government if you don't think the people of this great country care about Mississippi.

In the great words Albert J. Nock wrote in Our Enemy the State in 1934;

Heretofore in this country sudden crises of misfortune have been met by a mobilization of social power. In fact (except for certain institutional enterprises like the home for the aged, the lunatic-asylum, city-hospital and county-poorhouse) destitution, unemployment, "depression"and similar ills, have been no concern of the State, but have been relieved by the application of social power. Under Mr. Roosevelt, however, the State assumed this function, publicly announcing the doctrine, brand-new in our history, that the State owes its citizens a living. Students of politics, of course, saw in this merely an astute proposal for a prodigious enhancement of State power; merely what, as long ago as 1794, James Madison called "the old trick of turning every contingency into a resource for accumulating force in the government"; and the passage of time has proved that they were right. The effect of this upon the balance between State power and social power is clear, and also its effect of a general indoctrination with the idea that an exercise of social power upon such matters is no longer called for.

It is largely in this way that the progressive conversion of social power into State power becomes acceptable and gets itself accepted. When the Johnstown flood occurred, social power was immediately mobilized and applied with intelligence and vigour. Its abundance, measured by money alone, was so great that when everything was finally put in order, something like a million dollars remained. If such a catastrophe happened now, not only is social power perhaps too depleted for the like exercise, but the general instinct would be to let the State see to it. Not only has social power atrophied to that extent, but the disposition to exercise it in that particular direction has atrophied with it. If the State has made such matters its business, and has confiscated the social power necessary to deal with them, why, let it deal with them. We can get some kind of rough measure of this general atrophy by our own disposition when approached by a beggar. Two years ago we might have been moved to give him something; today we are moved to refer him to the State's relief-agency. The State has said to society, You are either not exercising enough power to meet the emergency, or are exercising it in what I think is an incompetent way, so I shall confiscate your power, and exercise it to suit myself. Hence when a beggar asks us for a quarter, our instinct is to say that the State has already confiscated our quarter for his benefit, and he should go to the State about it.

Its New Orleans that I dont wish to have rebuilt with my money..not the way those folks acted.

Everyone else showed great courage and humanity..glad to give to specific charities for your State..I do not want funds directed to LA.

Do you know where I can send for your State and be sure it will not go to LA?

I don't know about your church but ours didn't take up a collection for Florida, BET and any number of stars and companies didn't do any fundraising.

I imagine that you feel the way you do is because of the media focusing on NO and all the Bush bashing and blame games. The media won't stop playing politics and they won't show us or write about anyone but the whiners. They are the ones who have demoralized everyone.

We know your area is devastated but we don't really feel your pain, our houses are still standing.
