The number of new illegal immigrants to the United States surpassed the number of authorized immigrants from 1999 through at least last year, according to a study based on government statistics that was released today by the Pew Hispanic Center.
The study said that immigration to the United States-- legal and illegal, from all regions of the world-- rose during the 1990s, peaked in 2000 and declined substantially since 2001 as the national economy slowed. The number of new arrivals rose in 2004, as economic conditions improved, the study said.
Although, the arrival of both authorized and unauthorized immigrants declined with the economic downturn, the number of legal immigrants declined more sharply, the study said. Fewer legal immigrants arrived in 2003 and 2004 than in the mid-1990s, the study said, while the number of new illegal immigrants has settled back to about the same level as in the mid-1990s.
More than 34 million immigrants now live in the United States, and make up 12 percent of the nation's population, according to a Census Bureau estimate last year. The number has more than tripled since 1970, when the foreign-born population numbered 9.6 million. In the Washington area, one in six residents was born in another country.

Strictly hypothetical, but no, I would not report them.
Next.
B$, not calling it an amnesty program, doesn't change the outcome, and you know it. I guess more than a few congress critters noticed that too, since it never saw the light of day.
itsahoot - When President Eisenhower introduced "Operation Wetback"
You responded to that with:
PRND21 - That was a guest worker plan...
PRND21, are you saying that Operation Wetback was a guest worker program?
They still came, therefore the plan was ineffectual.
Good non-hysterical points, though.
You are flat out lying about one of the most important issues we face.
Illegal invaders caused a hospital near me (Port Chester, NY) to close because they never paid their bills.
Illegal invaders account for a huge amount of violent crime and are hard to track down because of no documentation.
Even if you were to do a background check on one of these guys, how would you know who they were? They all go by four and five names.
Those who deal with these people the most and see their net effect are the ones who want them out, not the other way around.
Thriving economy or not illegals would still be crossing because the freebies here are much better than in their homeland.
GW is the greatest asset to the Clinton Pres. in 08, we can all thank GW for destroying any chance of a so called conservative after the crap he has pulled. GW has given a bad name to conservatives.
Where's the amnesty part? That would mean Tancredo's plan is an amnesty, as well. Is it?
Ok fine, if some arab nation declared war on us and 20 million of its citizens here then what?
It is a slap in the face of legal immigrants to allow this lawlessness to continue.
I live in Los Angeles proper and you are hysterical.
You are Dane in another name. You obviously are not informed factually abount this issue or topic. The details of GWB's plan are nothing more than amnesty in another name.
Good question, when were they ever enforced? I DO favor a guest worker program, but only after the 15M ILLEGAL aliens here have all been deported, the borders are secure, and the Congress/President deomonstrate they are willing to enforce immigration laws.
In other words, likely NEVER!
Legal immigration - YES!
ILLEGAL immigration - NO!!
My point is simple. People who come here legally generally go to work because they can't legally come in if they have no means of support unless it's an asylum visa.
Just last weekend a Russian immigrant moved in with my wife and I and has a job waiting for her when she gets settled in. Because she's here legally she cannot be abused or taken advantage of by her employer. She will be paying taxes and her employer will be paying taxes and she will be a full contributer to American society.
Best of all, she WANTS TO BE AN AMERICAN.
I live in Los Angeles proper and you are hysterical.
Your not reading. The rest of the country has been getting a nice taste of this for past ten years now. It will only get worse for them. This we know for a fact.
We brought all those "wetbacks" here to feed America during WWII.
They were needed, then not needed and sent home.
Who would replace them now? Seen those unemployment numbers?
I don't know all the details of Bush's plan for a guest worker program, but Tancredo's plan would require applicants for a guest worker program to apply from their home countries, so it wouldn't be an amnesty.
Again, source these "lies" or don't post your hysterics to me.
Bush grants freebies? Or do liberal State and City governments?
Ban the freebies.
I never said otherwise...who's not reading?
