Facing criticism that he appeared disengaged from the disaster wrought by Hurricane Katrina, President Bush has been looking for opportunities to show his concern. But the White House will take the effort a step further Tuesday, venturing into untested waters by putting the nation's first lady on reality television.
Laura Bush will travel to storm-damaged Biloxi, Miss., to film a spot on the feel-good, wish-granting hit "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Mrs. Bush sought to be on the program because she shares the "same principles" that the producers hold, her press secretary said.
It's not clear exactly what Mrs. Bush will do, but Tom Forman, executive producer and creator, said he is hoping that she'll just pitch in and help unload.
"I think we say, 'Mrs. Bush, the stuff is over here, the people are over there, could you grab the other end of that mattress?' " Forman said. Press secretary Susan Whitson envisioned something closer to handing out clothing and thanking volunteers.
Forman said the episode will air in November.
"This is why it is so great the first lady is coming along, just to talk and hear stories and share tears and give hugs and remind everyone we are there for a long time and we are going to keep coming back and nobody has forgotten about them, including their government," Forman said.
Which is probably why the Bush team contacted the show for a booking instead of the other way around.
"We got a call from the White House saying, 'What are you doing and if you need help, just let us know,' " Forman said. "We said here's what we're doing and if the first lady would like to join us, we'd love to have her."

I like the show and I'll look forward to seeing our lovely Laura on it.
On Hardball tonight, Sissy Matthews tried to hammer a single nail in a 2x4 stud. He was doing a skit with the perky Katie in NY city building a house for Habitat for Humanity. They were apparently too good to actually travel to the wasteland of N.O. and lend a hand. They are going to build a house in 3rds in NY and then truck to NO and assemble it there. What a waste of money. I'm on HfHs regular donors list. I'll send a little letter this time instead of the usual check. And Sissy swung his hammer like well, you know, a sissy. Holding it up high near the head with little 2 inch taps. Katie actually held it down on the handle and swung it like she knew how. Kudos to her for that.
I like the show too and will be looking forward to it. Don't care to much for Mike Maloney but Paige...wow! That woman can run a plunge router.
"And Sissy swung his hammer like well, you know, a sissy."
LOL! Bet he's always 'hired' any hammer swinging done. Probably 1st time he's tried it. I'm w you - seems ridiculous that they're building these in NY (heard a bit about it on Fox & Friends this a.m.).
I caught a 9/11 special, a replay of an earlier show where Jessica Lynch followed through on a promise, through this show, to take care of Lori Piestewa's family. Incredible show.

I saw that show, too. It was really great! I definitely had tears flowing on that one - Lori seemed like an incredible woman with a wonderful family.
I couldn't stop the tears. The best example I have ever seen of love, respect, and giving. And re-airing it on 9/11 amplified and magnified the light of inherent goodness. It was just what the dr. ordered for me on that day. I hadn't seen the original broadcast. I was so touched by this I stopped in the middle and emailed ABC a 'thank you'.
I mentioned early on that Extreme Makeover should go down to NOrleans---they'll have the place built in a few months!
I think the First Lady would get a kick out of that!
Apparently she's coming in to Biloxi today. My b-i-l called from Gulfport this morning and said he'd heard that.
Yes, that's the show.
That's good...show more Laura (not Barbara)!
Why not Barbara? She'd take one look and that house would put itself together. God love that woman.
Don't know if you saw this ...
"Was I just really tired, or was this the same show?"
Sounds like the same show. It airs in the Seattle area at 8 p.m. on Sunday nights on ABC.
The left created the (false) impression that the President was 'disengaged' from Hurricane Katrina in spite of the fact that he was ahead of the game and on the phone to the intransigent governor and mayor before the storm hit....
And NOW, everything he does (or Laura) is only to create the 'impression' that he cares. What a bunch of hooey.
Good for Laura. Can't wait to see the show in November.
Why not Barbara? She'd take one look and that house would put itself together. God love that woman.
LOL! You got that right!
Makeover - why, I think she's just fine as it is. Why go on this wacko lib show and try to make a fine, decent woman into a liberal looking you-know-what? It can't make her any more liked, it will only do her bad. I have to wonder why she chose to do this?
