This is a recent post by Erick on ConfirmThem.com blog (a project of RedState.org):
Word in legal circles is that Priscilla Owen is set to become the next justice appointed to the United States Supreme Court.
Unfortunately, I have received reliable information late this afternoon that Karl Rove, among others, is making a last minute push for the President to consider Alberto Gonzales, despite previous assurances from inside the White House, Justice Department, and Senate that Gonzales was not being considered.
A third party source tells RedState that Rove is pushing for Gonzales and that Larry Thompsons name has gone off the radar. This afternoon I contacted my White House source who says Karl Rove believes that Gonzales is conservative and, given the current docket, will have time to prove it before midterm elections.
The source says it is not a guarantee and there are significant issues at play including confirmability. I have no word on other names, other than the usual that are already out there.
Looks like Im going to be headed to the driving range soon.
One last point from my White House source. The source says some conservatives inside the White House, including the source, feel some conservative frustration, i.e. conservatives are being seen, but not heard.
Don't be tricked so easily...
You may be right about the timing of the announcement ... but there is some buzz that it may come before the confirmation.
Gonzales has done nothing about illegal immigration.
Do we really want a panderer on the SUpreme Court?
PIng
This would be a huge mistake. Gonzalez is no conservative. I don't like him a-tall.
I've just e-mailed the president asking him not to go back on his promise to put in strict constitutionalists. Might be a good idea for the rest of us to do that as well. It was on the AFA site.
For what it's worth ping.
Hey, Echo ... not sure who's tricking whom, but I enjoy keeping up with the latest Supreme Court news and rumors (from credible sites).
If the White House is putting out false rumors, then they deserve the heat they get for it.
I personally think the choice will be Karen Williams or Diane Sykes.
If it's JRB I'll be happy.
I don't think they will announce a new nominee until after Roberts is confirmed by the full senate.
I am guessing that Bush heard the American People loud and clear the first time Gonzales was rumoured to be in contention for the scotus.
If the above rumour were true and Bush actually put Gonzales up, I would bet the odds of him being confirmed would only be 50/50. Americans would raise hades and let their Senators know it.
Out of curiousity, what exactly is the evidence that Alberto Gonzales is not sufficiently conservative?
I remember thinking that it was a sound move, even though it would be nice to terrorize the Senate and the leftist whiners with a double whammy, [Roberts and the new nominee] I can't believe they could handle the distraction.
Am I making any sense? ;)
The full Senate vote on Roberts will be on Thursday. It is unlikely that W will name someone before the Roberts confirmation is sealed. I suspect that he will name someone after that but not at the swearing in ceremony, when the spotlight is on Roberts as it well should be.
Exactly what "heat" would that be?
If you asked for information, knowing I would be doing something unethical in giving it to you, and I sent you around the block the long way, what "heat" are you going to give the Whitehouse? And why in the heck would the "Whitehouse" give a darn?
Were I part of the administration, I would make sure the "press" had their sweats and sneakers on 24/7.
I agree, they'll have more sense. Bush can't afford to turn Congressional Republicans against him, and Gonzales (if I'm not mistaken) is pro-choice. No chance.
Yes and NO!
Because bad/dumb/stupid is all we ever hear from the press/media, it is easy for anyone to misunderestimate W. He keeps surprising everyone and will not fail us here. I hope!!
No to Gonzales
Wake up, George.
