Karl Rove to POTUS: Put Gonzales on the Court
ConfirmThem.com ^ | September 26, 2005 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 09/26/2005 11:20:16 AM PDT by Oliver Optic

This is a recent post by Erick on ConfirmThem.com blog (a project of RedState.org):

Word in legal circles is that Priscilla Owen is set to become the next justice appointed to the United States Supreme Court.

Unfortunately, I have received reliable information late this afternoon that Karl Rove, among others, is making a last minute push for the President to consider Alberto Gonzales, despite previous assurances from inside the White House, Justice Department, and Senate that Gonzales was not being considered.

A third party source tells RedState that Rove is pushing for Gonzales and that Larry Thompson’s name has gone off the radar. This afternoon I contacted my White House source who says Karl Rove “believes that Gonzales is conservative and, given the current docket, will have time to prove it before midterm elections.”

The source says it is not a guarantee and there are significant issues at play — including confirmability. I have no word on other names, other than the usual that are already out there.

Looks like I’m going to be headed to the driving range soon.

One last point from my White House source. The source says some conservatives inside the White House, including the source, feel some “conservative frustration,” i.e. conservatives are being seen, but not heard.

I think a true conservative will be chosen in the end. I don't believe that Rove is honestly pushing Gonzalez. Rove is himself a social conservative. He knows better. Also, even if he is pushing for him, who says the POTUS has to listen? Bush is his own man, and he knows his legacy may hang in the balance on this one.

Easy Tiger, you know this information may not even be true. Even if true, it doesn't mean the POTUS is going to act on Rove's advice. Don't crucify the man before ANYTHING has even happened.

I hope this is not true. In the past, Karl Rove has shown himself to be an absolute moron on right-to-life issues, but I would have hoped that the last couple of elections would have educated him to the foolishness of that approach.

There's absolutely no doubt that if Gonzalez is appointed it will be a turning point. People would no longer wonder whether Bush could be trusted to fulfill his promises to his base. They would know, and Bush would lose a large part of his base.

Bush doesn't face another election, but a Gonzalez appointment would have a serious negative effect on the 2006 congressional elections and the 2008 election. All those folks who came out in 2002 and 2004 would stay home, just as they did when Bob Dole was nominated.

Yes, what's the old saying, "those who tell don't know, and those who know don't tell" I'm sure it's a very small circle of folks who know what the decision will be.

Nothing against RedState's White House source ... he's likely pretty credible ... which is why I posted this.

But I learned my lesson last time about taking these rumors too seriously.

Speaking of which, another name being circulated today is Diane Sykes.

:-)

Carl Rove is Bush's evil genius. Nothing that slimy guy does would surprise me.

If Gonzales winds up on the Supreme court, Bush will have destroyed the Republican Party as NO conservative will ever consider voting for any one like him again.

Like the Whigs, the Repubs will fade into the Dustbin of history. Conservatives will stay home in the millions in the next few elections and the Dems will take over Congress and the White House. The Republican Party will collapse due to lack of financial support as they will no longer be able hold office, and a new conservative party, one which RESPECTS the wishes of its constituents, will arise from the ashes.

E-Mail Bush and TELL him - GONZALES NO!! Owens o Brown SI!!

This smells like a standard trial balloon. I don't buy it for a second. I'm going against conventional wisdom and guessing it's going to be Michael Luttig.

I've been trotting Sykes' name out since O'Connor announced her resignation. She's top notch and with a bit less exposure than Owens, Clement, Jones, etc...

"Al "La Raza" Gonzalez? With his ties to the ultra left-win "La Raza" group?
Karl needs to get out more."

Bush should find / appoint a CONSERVATIVE FEMALE HISPANIC!

Then everyone would be happy (almost).

I would accept either Janice Owens Brown or Priscilla Owens. Both, better, as other openings come up. I basically want another Scalia or Thomas.

I'm not as paranoid of Gonzalez as some here, I'm fine with him as AG. But I want to see bona fide Conservatives and bona fide Originalists on the Supreme Court.

"The Roberts vote is scheduled for Thursday (I think.) Do you expect this announcement to come before then?"

It is and it won't.
