When Delta Flight 1880 landed late Saturday at Logan International Airport, the pilot went on the intercom to make a request of the passengers preparing to grab their carry-on bags: Sit for a moment and honor a fallen soldier.
''The pilot said, 'We have a hero on this flight and sadly, he isn't with us, but his mother is escorting his remains,' " said Barbara Bell, sister of Sergeant Pierre A. Raymond, 28, an Army reservist from Lawrence who died Tuesday in Germany after being wounded in Iraq.
The normal bustle of an emptying airplane immediately ceased, she said.
''He went on to say that 'a sergeant from the Army is escorting them as well', and then [the pilot] thanked him for doing what he did and for keeping us safe and free."

Mine too!
Pukin Dog?
Early morning fog...correcting tagline...
Pukin Dog is also an A-grade American on the 'republic scale', :^)
If there had been some anti American, Cindy Sheehan-loving people on that plane I suppose they would have booed, and harassed the mother.
That is very interesting.
Phantom, same thing happened to my screen too.
"I love how the Boston Globe feels it necessary to put hero in quotation marks. Classy."
The heros of teh Globe must pass the test of being Democrat politicians, or their hangers on, thus John Kerry, Swift Boat Hero.
We can only hope we will continue to see this recognition more and more.
Mine had that problem too. RIP soldier.
One of the things I remember reading very young was Hitler's fascination with ...the power of the spoken word.
***The last few times I flew the pilots recognized active duty troops on board coming home and the cabin filled with applause.***
The PEOPLE know.
email your President today to tell him you've got his back. He's going through hell right now with all the attacks from the left:
messages@whitehouse.gov
A few words will do the trick. Just tell him you back him up. And, YES, his people will tell him how many Americans are behind him.
I am going to make my T-Shirt today...
I loved the T-shirt at the anti-cindi, pro-troop mission in Crawford worn by a mom of a soldier that said on the back "My son has your back" and on the front it said something like " Sleep well tonight, America"
I am going to put on the front " President Bush has had our backs for five hard years" and on the back " Now I have your back, Mr. President, rest well."
Need to sharpen up the back message. Will work on it.
I truly love our President and his administration-top to bottom.
Ms Samuels,I find it absolutely disgusting, and quite telling, that you chose to put the word "hero" in quotation marks in this story.
You may as well have included the word "alleged," as well, as that was obviously your intent.
That is example number 356,876,433 of the liberal bias of your "newspaper."
Sincerely,
It was a good story.
How often do other freepers actually click on the link and read the whole story? I usually do...sometimes it saves me from removing my foot from my keyboard!
One fascinating fact from Hitler's Germany was how well he controlled the masses. He confiscated all the radios, and then *gave* everyone radios....that were only set to *his* frequencies.
And that explains why Hogan and Co always used a coffee pot!
DECENCY always makes me weep. . .
