That was a great book by Philip Wylie.
I enjoyed the sequel too, "After Worlds Collide."

Small Strands
Theres something about string, and yarn, that binds a womans life.
Perhaps an instinctive bond that helps to get us through the strife.
What seems a passing fancy when youre just a little girl,
May still excite you even though your hair has turned to pearl.
Were bound to one another with small strands which we could snap,
Except they lead us to a source of strength that we can tap.
They bind a little girl into a net of learning ways,
To make things that express her love, and brighten up her days.
Shes caught up in the magic that the older woman spins,
Until she finds shes stuck behind a forest of needles and pins.
Her own defensive fortress that will shield her from concern,
With a beneficial hobby that will still be fun to learn.

"rip" means copying the movie files (DVDs store movies as files) to the hard drive. (IMTOO DVD RIPPER)
"convert" means format translation. I believe (I am still learning) that DVDs use MPEG2 video format; MPEG4 (aka Divx, aka, Xvid) compresses file sizes hugely. It's all rather complex, wretchedly defined, so I am still learning my way around.
So far what little I have been successful at uses "cladDVD" to 'rip' the files from DVD to the computer's hard drive, and then "Divx6" to convert the "*.INF/*.VOB" files on the hard drive to a much smaller "*.divx" file that I can play on my PDA, using the "handheld" destination profile specified in the Divx6 converter.
There's a tremendous amount of poorly-described technology involved. I think there are many paths by which one might do this, but this is the first one in which I have found success. Many of the translations options I would like... I have not yet been able to use.

Been many decades since I've read that! Trying to remember... didn't they try socialism, only to have it fail?
