Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Someone needs to start a Ratherbiased.com website on all the things Joe Bastardi hypes and is wrong about. It's disturbing to see him plastered all over FNC.

Consider that MOST good "Christians" have donated time and money to the Katrina relief effort, and do so with no fanfare, or public announcements to elicit accolades. Most of us just silently help out, and don't expect to be thanked for it.

Some Texans didn't do themselves proud, either. There were multiple fights at gas stations. It was also reported that some motorists in the front of gas lines not only filled their tanks but multiple containers. Then they would go to the back of the line and try to sell them. Also, in Luflin, armed men stole filled gas containers from the back of city trucks in front of the workers. I think that if there had not been so many cops present, we would have seen much more looting and chaos.

I'm sure there's something wrong with my math, there's no way that NO is going to flood to Mississippi River levels....completely, unerringly, totally positive...

Nothing wrong with your math. The Mississippi is 14 ft above seas level. Lake P is 3 ft above seaslevel. Even if a levee on the Miss side goes, all it will do is send a cascade of water through NO down to the basin and the water will rise to Lake P levels.

For the water to rise to Mississippi levels would require Lake P and all the surrounding area to fill up with enough water to let that happen. And that would require the gulf level to rise accordingly also, as all the water would just run off into the gulf.

Last time I checked only one flood has measured up to thiose levels, and I believe the only person tosee it was named Noah.

Reporting here from Tyler...very windy, maybe 25-25 w/ gusts around 50+..just guessing.Already a large tree down across the road on my street. Can't tell, but Rita seems to be moving NE?

Hi Flowergirl. Thanks. Stay safe !

I heard someone, I think on Fox say something about it going back into Gulf. I must have misunderstood reporter and do not know why he even said something to that affect. Weather channel doesn't indicate that. Rita is going Northeast.

The statistics of NO show that it is NOT a small amount of people in NO. High crime rate. High murder rate. High degree of corruption all the way up the line.

How can you possibly say that it is a small amount of people in NO? For pete's sake, the corruption is WELL known as you said yourself. Do you doubt that the NO police are perfectly capable of joining in the Looting and stealing that bus from the Superdome to haul their loot? Of course you don't doubt that they are capable of doing it -because you know that the corruption is just that prevalent.

It is not a small amount of people nor is it EVERY person.

There has been talk about this major "stalling" and even "looping" behavior for a couple days now, but I just don't believe that will become true. I would put strong odds that the GFS/AVN "book it east" model will prove most accurate.

In case you missed it:

"And yet, I have to blame the Dems more, much more, for her attitude than the woman herself. She's only what they made her.

That photo of the looter with all the Heineken's makes me laugh, makes me angry, and then makes me sad, in that order. I look at the guy and I can't help but wonder that in a different reality where he didn't end up the product of a failed social experiment, like the creation of a mad scientist, who knows what his destiny might have been? He might have been a doctor, or a musician, or who knows what else.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Too bad the Dems have wasted so many, and never even gave them a chance."

Yes, I have no heart, alright. None at all. I am a monster. Like Bush.

Hypocrite. You are guilty of the very charge you make about making judgments. But I will add, "Forgive her, Lord, for she knows not what she says."

The Govenor of Texas and the Mayor of Houston and other cities that I heard being interviewed sounded like they had had their plan in place for years. They must practice quite a bit.

Yeah, they actually practice using their brain cells.

GBU, thanks for the link.

Flowergirl, my nephew is there. We were told that his wife is at work today, until 1, unless the power flickers. Then the bank will send them home.

Hope you and yours are safe...stay away from tall trees!!

At the same time...I saw my fellow Texans giving gas to stranded motorists from their five gallon containers...for free. I believe there was much, much more of that type of thing going on than the other.

Rita is currently stuck between two High's with nothing to steer her. She may try to catch a small ride on the Jet that is way way north. This could cause a slight movement NE. She may also catch a small bump from the TExas H when it starts to move SW and there is a chance she moves slowly SW with the High. If that happens she will head back out into the Gulf and then it is anybodies guess.

Did you read the report from the "white boy" who volunteered to help at the Astrodome about how he was treated and what he saw?

Just curious.
