Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.
MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.
An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.
On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.
Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Your number for wind gust is correct (140 mph) and mine (120 mph) is incorrect. Apologies to all. Guess many are watching them now so I'll shut up for awhile. :(
Good night dixiechick2000
take care now!
Rick L better get out of the open!
Turned off my TV though, have to begin the going to bed process somewhere...
My mistake. Replace Katrina with Rita.
Not sure of her politics, but I got a kick out of Galveston's Mayor. She's not afraid to say what's on her mind.
It's a FEMA/NG convoy. They're moving in from Ft. Hood and Austin, and will be staging at the Astrodome. Units that were *there* are rolling in on the edges of the storm, so they'll be there when the storm leaves.
They were called on Monday, so they're here now. It's obvious that the adults have been in charge since day one and are following their plans.
Thank you very much.
It's good to see you, again.
Thank you for all of your informative posts.
Nitey nite!
So does Laura Miller. Thats not the problem. The problem is that she's an idiot.
Did you see him run into the stairwell? One of his cameramen was laughing like crazy -- said he thought this was great fun... Rick didn't sound like he thought it was as funny.
Thanks - you're right. I'm gonna go offline and unplug my computer for a while.
Yea, according to KPLC...gusts to 140mph...part of airport terminal near the arrivals area has collapsed...remember, this hurricane is coming in at a lower pressure than Hurricane Audrey....worst case for Acadiana...
While that was true, it didn't stop at least four FReepers from saying that it was a deathtrap like the SuperDome.
Obviously, they weren't Texans.

Position puts Rita 11.5 nm/13.2 miles from Sabine Pass, at a bearing of 296 degrees. Looks like the center will be making landfall just east of there in about an hour.

Wait a second! You mean Rick Perry didn't follow the La. 24 hr waiting period on asking for Federal help?
The eye has 20 miles of marsh to travel over before it gets over dry land.
Does anyone from Texas parse their words? (I can say that as someone born and raised in Texas)...
OK about the 50Kb limit...but I was hosting the pix...not the NWS...
Oak trees typically have roots that go down as deep as the tree is high. Picture the oak tree turned upside down, that's how far down oak tree roots go down. Palm trees on the other hand, have shallow roots.
