Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

If I hadn't gotten into the Cheap White Chablis, my grammer would have been a whole lot better.

Box wine rules, when you totally upset about not only the hurricane, but also the aftermath. I am going to have to hit the bed (thank the Dear Lord I have one), and sleep off my total fear of the after effect of this storm on our entire country.

What you suffer up front, we will slowly get as an after effect...

Isn't that prerequisite?

Yes it is. I love listening to these guys.

Richard Hoagland is on coast to coast tonight. He says "someone" is causing these hurricanes. He says he will not speculate on who it is doing it though.

He says "Why is the president in the bunker?"

This guy is a nutball.

Which hospital? Most of them will still have a secondary generator or two.

I used to work out of Carliss, La. (where the right side of the eye-wall is coming through), and although it's 20 mi. inland, with this thing coming through at high tide, they are in some serious trouble. It may be inland, but the only thing between Carliss, Lake Charles, ect and the Gulf of Mexico are rivers and bayou's.

"Looting in Port Arthur

Why are NOLA police officers in Port Arthur?"

Return flight from Vegas diverted there.

Geraldo is in Port Arthur and said their location was surrounded by buildings with a lot of glass, their concern was mostly flying glass

Why in the world would he pick a building full of glass to stay in ??

So you're saying that Geraldo picked a location surrounded by building with a lot of glass, and because of that he cannot report from there?

Gee what does Fox pay him to do?

This wobble north might spare Sabine Pass the worst of the surge. It was pointed right at it before... hopefully it does pass just east. Bad news for Cameron and Lake Charles though.

LA Floodgages (in upstream order):

Calcasieu River at Cameron
North Calcasieu Lake near Hackberry
Calcasieu River at I-10 at Lake Charles

The Cameron Gage has risen 3 feet in the past 6 hours, perhaps from the north, since the other gages have dropped a little.

Interesting. Well, next time you see an ancient cementary give it a try. I got my picture strictly without trying, was taking pictures of our horseback ride on the plantation.

24 hours ago they were describing that the backwater flooding along the Calcasieu River would likely be worse than storm surge.
