During his visit to FEMA emergency operations center here in Washington today, I asked the President what good he thinks he could do traveling to the hurricane zone later today in anticipation of Rita. He initially brushed off questions, but then spun around to say, "We will make sure that my entourage does not get in the way of people doing their job."
What a difference a botched hurricane makes!
The same President who appeared just a tad aloof taking in Katrina's wrath from Air Force One, or strumming a guitar after a speech as Katrina was striking, is now desperately seeking a new photo opportunity to symbolize his stewardship in response to Rita.
Then we received late word today that Mr. Bush has scrapped his trip to San Antonio where he was going to visit search and rescue teams staging for the storm. Those teams are moving east to follow the storm track and the White House says the President didn't want to slow that down. Mr. Bush will ride out the storm in Colorado at Northern Command to view the military response to Rita.
This hurricane gives him his first major test. An aide told me this morning I'm paraphrasing: look, if you are going to say mistakes were made last time you are obliged to see for yourself what's being done in preparation now.
Bottom line is, these are photo ops. White House aides admit they want Mr. Bush to be seen in briefings and personally tending to the government's response. Mr. Bush has no choice but to be in the middle of the action. Disaster relief and rebuilding are now the canvas of his second term. Between storms and war, the President's vision may face less scrutiny than his administration's basic competence.

Gregory wants air time and ink for Gregory. Honesty, accuracy, relevance, getting the story right -- none of those whings have anything WHATSOEVER to do with either his shouted questions or this pat-myself-on-the-back written article.
This "reporter" is pond scum. He would be a disgrace to his network, if that was possible.
Congressman Billybob
The hatred just reeks from the kindergarten crowd.
Not only did President Bush mock Gregory, but Chirac (wonder of wonders) stuck up for the President.
Katrina was botched?
As far as hurricanes go, I was under the impression that Katrina delivered in spades, and then some.
Gregory needs to take this point up with nature and nature's Creator.
Since I don't want to put to words what I think of Gregory, it begs whether I should post at all. But I suspect the lack of content speaks for itself of how deep the feelings run.
perzactly. Another fine example of balanced journalistic insight. yeesh
The Rats will never be happy. Their most happy Yelling and full of hate.
Mr. Gregory, may I call you a 'jackass'?????
Thank you for that reminder that Dick Gregory got his comeuppance from `Chimpy Bushitler The Idiot' himself. And in French, no less. Kinda like Gunga Dan's undying hatred of Bush the Elder for standing up to him in 1988.
What petty, spiteful, meanspirited lowlifes these media people are. Great `tribunes of the people'. Always standing up for the little guy.
Yeah, right. May the rocks fall upon them. No loss whatsoever. Worthless, worthless oxygen thieves.
What I find remarkable about David is that his antics are in fact motivated by the need to compensate for ego deficits. I can identify the sources of two such deficits.
Like most if not all contemporary journalists, an exquisite style of intellect will never be his. And David will never realize his fantasized Hollywood tough-guy image, as we all witnessed in his recent little tantrum with Scott McClellan.
Ugh! It doesn't matter what the president does. He could be Superman and spin around to make the hurricane stop and they would still say that was bad, because he had made so many people anxious.
Geez, I hate these people...especially this one. They whine when Bush doesn't show up on time; when he does, they whine about it being a photo-op and distracting from operations. They said these same things in Florida last year. Where was Gregory when Clinton was making crosses in Normandy...or laughing and than crying at Ron Brown's funeral. These same people who hate the religiosity of this president, couldn't wait for the photo-op of Clinton walking out of church with a Bible in his hand. If Al-Qaeda is taking requests...never mind.
"This worthless f****ng as**ole"
BIG TIME :-)
Please don't denigrate the ultimate sacrifice of our Savior in order to make a pithy justification for the fact that it took three days for FEMA to respond.
On top of all that, I bet he has a really small penis.
That's funny! He looks a little bit older in the picture on the right.
gregory is a wus elite, a kerry lite wannabe; "I know about everything", I can not wait till he gets his!!!!
and one ball that is green and lumpy
