TORONTO Canadas justice minister says the countrys gun laws are among the toughest on the books, and he dismissed calls for new minimum sentences as a quick-fix solution to a spate of gunplay in Toronto.
Irwin Cotler made the remarks Wednesday before hosting a one-day forum on urban violence at the University of Toronto, to which 120 city and government leaders were invited.
The meeting was called to address Torontos escalating gun violence, which has claimed 41 lives this year.
We have a very tough regime already in place. Thats why we have to look to other initiatives that may need to be taken, Cotler said.
Yeah ~ like letting law abiding citizens carry guns.
An Armed Citizen, Is A Safe Citizen!
Are they starting to get a clue??
This is Canada we're talking about.
Always thought of Toronto as one of those cowboy lawless yahoo type of cattle towns.
No, they are not. What this badly-written article is trying to say is that the federal Justice Minister, a truly clueless dork named Irwin Cotler, is against minimum sentences for people convicted of committing crimes with guns.He wants to continue doing what has been shown not to work (restricting gun ownership by law-abiding people) and not do what has been shown to work (locking up criminals).
Actually, poorly written and non-informative articles like this are the norm for many Cnd. publications. For fun, go to www.cbc.ca and read some of their 'in depth' reports. Most are only a page or two long, don't say much about the issue they claim to write about, and carry the underlying theme is that 'its America's fault'.
Also, don't forget that what may be such a painfully obvious solution to crime for the rest of us is often over-looked here, either that or the courts simply lack the cajones to put people in jail for extended periods of time (google: 'Karla Homolka' AND 'Rape' AND 'Murder' AND 'sentence').
Or they lack the cajones to even convict people (google: 'Air India Flight 182' AND 'Trial')
This is the world's Moral superpower afterall. Not too moral to put someone in a concrete & steel room for an extended period of time.
He doesn't want change, so long as problems continue he can call for more restrictions on law abiding citizens.
Hard to believe what a bunch of pansies these clowns look like
