WASHINGTON -- Embattled Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Lester Crawford resigned Friday, telling his staff that at age 67 it was time to step aside.
His resignation came just two months after the Senate, in a long-delayed move, elevated the longtime agency deputy and acting commissioner to the top job.
Crawford's tenure was marked by increasing criticism of the agency, as the painkiller Vioxx was pulled off the market for safety problems and regulators held up wider access to emergency contraception.

Something to do with a buffed up pension?
I don't understand why he's leaving two months after getting installed as permanent director.
Embattled, yea right.
I'm here in DC, and my office works closely with Les. This has the air of scandal to it. It's not to do with the Vioxx flub, it must be something more private and embarassing.
Gee I thought it was because he's been accused of being a Neanderthal because he balked at making the "morning after pill" available over the counter without some protections in place to prevent minors from using them like popcorn.
"Embattled Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Lester Crawford resigned"
Somebody please explain.... Why is it, whenever anyone in the Bush administration resigns, they are always described as "embattled"? Maybe the writers in the MSM need a new thesaurus.
Most likely.
Most definitely.
That is old news.
Blame the limited vocabulary of the MSM journalists. The intellectual level of most of the writers for the mainstream media has declined drastically over the past thirty years. We can assume these outdated papers can't get "good help" anymore because they have so tightly restricted the eligible pool of writers to those that buy into the socialist agenda. The general vocabulary, the investigative skills and the overall level of creativity is clearly suffering within the MSM as a result of their prejudicial hiring practices. It's similar to the problems caused by incest and inbreeding: the gene pool has become too narrow.
Good riddance! Abolish the FDA!!!
