Professor Says Pink Locker Room Promotes Sexism, Homophobia U Of I Professor Challenges Iowa's Compliance With NCAA

POSTED: 10:44 am CDT September 23, 2005 UPDATED: 11:05 am CDT September 23, 2005

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A University of Iowa law professor said the school is promoting homophobia and will challenge whether Iowa is violating NCAA rules by painting a visitors' locker room pink.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Discuss: Iowa Sports

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Erin Buzuvis moved to Iowa from Boston in the fall and discovered the visiting team's locker room at Kinnick Stadium was pink -- something she said promotes sexism and homophobia.

But officials with the school's sports department said they won't change the pink walls, which is a long-time facet in Kinnick Stadium.

The color was introduced decades ago by former Hawkeye coach Hayden Fry to soften opponents. But recent stadium renovations added more pink items to the locker room, including lockers, sinks and urinals.

Buzuvis plans to speak with a school committee compiling a report on Iowa's compliance with NCAA regulations.

The report is conducted every five years and does not yet address the pink locker room

The pink coloring is fine. Now if they would just stop playing show tunes over the PA.

That locker room won't make a damn bit of difference this weekend.

Too true. Iowa's last 2 games have shown many areas that needed work and they rarely play well in Columbus. Still, unlike they Buckeyes who rarely needed it, in Iowa we understand hope. However, to stay on topic, remember that the last time the men of Scarlet and Grey met the old (walls only) pink locker room they were trounced 33-7! Hopefully the pink urinals will fix the "7" your next visit.

The tale of Bo papering over the pink locker room has been much repeated, but that wasn't the biggest effort made to stop its mojo. One visitor (IIRC Northwestern) actually repainted their own home locker room pink the week before their visit to try to acclimate their players. Fry routed them before they ever left home!

Excerpt
By comparison, pink has been found to have a tranquilizing and calming effect within minutes of exposure. It suppresses hostile, aggressive, and anxious behavior — interesting given its traditional association with women in Western culture. Pink holding cells are now widely used to reduce violent and aggressive behavior among prisoners, and some sources have reported a reduction of muscle strength in inmates within 2.7 seconds. It appears that when in pink surroundings people cannot be aggressive even if they want to, because the color saps their energy.

Nifty! They need to start using this at Gitmo.

There was also a study done that demonstrated that listening to rock music makes you weaker. Weight lifters lost about 1/3 of their ability to lift weights while listening to the Rolling Stones.

This woman really doesn't have anything better to do?

Apparently not. What I find amusing is that the pink visitors' locker room has been a tradition at this school's stadium for many years, but this beeyotch expects the school to fawn over her righteous indignation when she is brand-new to the institution.

Hawks are going to the Rose Bowl. Hadn't you heard ?

I hope they enjoy the view from the nosebleed section. Maybe the Athletic Dept. will supply binoculars. :)

For what it's worth, I saw this professor Buzuvis on the local news this evening and, I was struck by how she looks so very... "butch" I guess is the best way to describe it.

If she were to enter a men's locker room and keep her clothes on and mouth shut, it's conceivable no one would even notice her.
