Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VI
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 9:39:06 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Dangerous Hurricane Rita is expected to make landfall in the northeast Gulf of Mexico within 24 hours. Tornados have spawned in Louisiana. Water is filling the Ninth Ward of New Orleans again. A bus carrying elderly evacuees was gutted by fire this morning outside Dallas, with multiple fatalities. Television crews have positioned their hurricane reporters throughout the region to attain maximum drama effects. Whoooooa.

With all Shep's hot air she can't get a breath in edgewise and will probably grow to a Cat 9!

I was on the phone just now with a friend of mine residing (and hunkering down) in Houston - living on relatively high ground. She said she just lost power....

It looks like NHC is starting to issue hourly position updates. I won't post the 5 pm one because we have the 6 pm advisory coming up shortly.

I don't take this article as supporting the industry, rather the opposite. The oil and gas industry causing the entire gulf coast to sink into the abyss? I don't think so. Subsidence, maybe some possible localized effects but not area wide impacts. Global warming? The usual leftist tripe.

It is certainly true that without a source of siltation to offset subsidence, the city will continue to sink. I like their suggestion that anyone who wants to rebuild with government help, has to build greater than 30 ft. above sea level. Other scientific "facts" of the article (liquefaction from hurricanes, resonant waves causing levee failure AHEAD of the storm) sound like the stuff of science fiction.

So do they call them refugees, evacuees, or illegalees?

Bayou Manchac flooded during Allison. Perkins road was impassable from "The Toy" house to Santa Maria subdivision..... Alligator Bayou was flooded as well during that storm.

The poor man didn't know there were causalities on the bus...A STUCK ON STUPID reporter told him if he had any friends with him that died and he answered them with a question mark..his nurse quickly spoke out, apparently upset and told the reporters that was enough...and whisked him off!! The man didn't know folk were killed...LEAVE IT TO THE DAMN MEDIAWHORES!!! Grrrr

i swear i ain't seeing much west here lately. i'm gonna go eat supper and see if an hour makes a difference.

Depending on how I hold the straight-edge to either the satellite loop or the radar loop, it's headed right for the Texas/Louisiana border or slightly east.

I agree that the possible eastward motion I saw in those few frames appears to have been a mini-jog . . . now I see a slight westward shift of the mostly due north motion . . . and once again, for the billionth time in the last 24 hours, the storm has worked itself east of the NHC revised official track . . .

That is truely amazing. On goole earth I just measured it to be about 1400 miles across from the outermost western edge in west Texas to out a few hundred miles east of the Georgia coast.
Before I saw the link you supplied I was posting a comment about the distance I am from the storm in Dallas and that I was seeing bands of clouds 400 miles away. But 1400 is jaw dropping. It helps one to realize why you should fear God.

I'm wondering if she's not going to go in and then loop back into the Gulf.
