Jimmy Carter: Gore Beat Bush in 2000

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 23
2005

Five years after the controversial 2000 presidential election, ex-President Jimmy Carter now says he's certain Al Gore defeated George W. Bush.

"Well I would say that in the year 2000, the country failed abysmally in the presidential election process," Carter told a panel Monday at American University in Washington, D.C. "There's no doubt in my mind that Al Gore was elected president."

Those in attendance broke out in applause for that statement.

"[Gore] received the most votes nationwide, and in my opinion, he also received the most votes in Florida," Carter continued. "And the decision was made as you know on a 5-4 vote on a highly partisan basis by the U.S. Supreme Court, so I would say in 2000, there was a failure."

The year 2000 saw the closest presidential election in American history, as Bush won the electoral vote 271-266, despite losing the popular vote to Gore by a half-million votes.

Carter's analysis went on to include last year's matchup between Bush and Democrat Sen. John Kerry, as the election came down to a battle over the electoral votes in Ohio.

"The year 2004 is hard to grade," said Carter. "I don't have any detailed information about what actually went on in Ohio. If Ohio had gone one way or the other, it would have changed the outcome of the election. And the only thing that I know about Ohio, was that there's general consensus that the secretary of state of Ohio, who is responsible for the administration of the election, was highly partisan in his public approach and perhaps even in his private adminstration. But I don't know about that."

Carter's remarks are sparking discussion on messageboards across the Internet, with comments including:

"...And the only thing that I know about Ohio, was that there's general consensus that the secretary of state of Ohio,..., was highly partisan in his public approach and perhaps even in his private adminstration. But I don't know about that."

That hypocrite! Bush's margin was TEN TIMES that of Jimmy Carter's in the 1976 race (11,000). Click here for 1976 Ohio results A move of only 19,000 votes between Ohio and Hawaii (who had a partisan secretary of state) would have given Ford the election.

Has there ever in the USA history been a worse President than Jimmy Carter? In my mind the mess we are in currently in the Middle East was because of his wimpy response to the hostage taking in Iran during his term.

Since he wasn't elected in 2000, he's still got one in his back pocket. Care to discuss 2004's election results?)

Dear Jimmy,
Care to discuss the 1980 election results?

More and more I'm beginning to think that Brother Billie Carter was the SMART one in that family.

"[Gore] received the most votes nationwide, ..."

Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, that's the reason you failed as President. The Constitution provides for the election of the President by Electoral College. You don't understand, apparently, what the Electoral College is. Jimmy, why don't you go out and paint a house and leave the business of running the world to those who know how to do it. Remember Iran, Jimmy? Remember the hostages, Jimmy? Remember the long gas station lines on your watch, Jimmy? Remember 16% interest rates and 18% inflation rates on your watch, Jimmy?

Jimmy, why don't you get a hammer and go drive nails in a porch somewhere. Your legacy as President wasn't much better than Clinton's.

They will NEVER get over it!
What a bunch of losers.

OTOH, I STRONGLY believe Clinton won his second term by massive voter fraud. There's just no explaining that victory any other way.

My home state of Georgia apologizes for Jimmah Carter.

President Bush won in 2004 by a few million.

Gore lost his "home" state of Tennessee in 2000.

Gore and Carter are failures.

". . .and in my opinion, he also received the most votes in Florida. . ."

Now...just why is this miserable excuse for an ex-pres's opinion important? Or even recordable?

Why does anyone wish to post this garbage on here?

At our history museum there is a traveling exhibit entitled "The American Presidency". Throughout the exhibit, there is one President who did more to damage the reputation of the office of the President than any other.

Whether it was the only President to use a nickname during the swearing-in...."Jimmy" Carter, instead of "James Earl".....or instead of using the word Inaugural "Ball", Jimmah's printed tickets said Inaugural "Parties".

The man has always been a total disgrace.

Ever since Carter personally trashed President Bush over the Iraq War Jimmy has found himself on the outside looking in. The President did not ask him to help raise money for the Tsunami victims or the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Sounds to me like JC is suffering from a bad case of sour grapes.
